Here are some pics of some of my old glow plugs. Glow pluga re sort of one of those disposable things that no one saves. When they get them, they pull them out of the box or package and use them, throwing away the old bad plug. So it is difficult to find and see the old vintage glow plugs as used in the beginnings of the glow plug era for model engines.

One of the Arden Glow Plugs from the guy that invented the glow plug. Note that you could unscrew the gold plated top part to replace the element.
These were sort of a two piece glow plug. I think I am the only one to have ever posted a pic of a Arden glow plug on the internet so far.

Now this old Russian Glow Plug is a bit more contemporary being made in the 1970's. I got it with a old Raduga 10cc engine. I am told that these old Russian plugs were very good as they had more platinum in the coil so they worked really good then.

Yes they did. In the 1950-1960 era, Champion V-2 was THE Plug. The larger ones were used mainly in those engines that were converted from spark-ignition. Around 1960 or slightly before, when engines with higher compression started hitting the market, it was not uncommon when an engine started up, for the white element to depart the plug case. Not good! [:@] I remember getting hit in the forehead and that kind of started my change over. OTOH in the Fox .19, .29, and .35s for CL, the bar on those low compression engines, with a single bypass, really ran well with the Champ. V-2.

You certainly have some that I have never heard of. Shucks, I thought that I had probably tried all the older U.S. plugs, but I was wrong.

somewhere i have an old glow plug made by AC. standard 1/4-32 threads but the hex part is much larger than the standard 5/16"...still lights up too.

Was Fireball one of the originals?  They were/are made by an Ohio company I believe.

The Fireball brand glow plugs have been around since 1947.
They are still made today. I think the business has been bought and sold several times now though.
Swanson Associates claim they have been making them since 1947, but I don't know if it is true or not anymore. It may be just marketing.

I have a few of the old Champion plugs. One day, overcome by curiosity, I tried one ina Saito 72 on the test stand. Fired right up and ran well, though I only ran it for a minute or so.

Here's a KLG plug which used to come in a packet very similar to the Champion plug. These were almost standard issue in Australia back in the 50's because it was about the only plug available to us. The full wording stamped on the plug was KLG-MINIGLOW.

That KLG glow plug looks like a two piece unit like the Arden plugs. One could unscrew the center part with the coil and replace it.
Did KLG offer a replacement core for their glow plugs?

No, the KLG plug didn't have a replaceable coil but if a coil broke we'd stick the head of a pin inside to overlap two coils and get electrical contact again so we could have another flight.....then repeat the process. I keep the plug in the photo in my Dooling 29 so it looks period and keeps the dust out .

While reorganizing some of my model airplane stuff I found a old still New in Package Wen Mac Glow Plug.






I also found a couple of old Cox .15 glow plug heads like this one too. Check out the price way back then. I remember thinking it was expensive at the time.


I was also surprised to find a old NIP Cox .010 glow plug head too. It also has a price tag that is interesting from years ago.



Years ago someone used to make special Cox .020 glow plug head adapters for letting one use short glow plugs on a .020 engine.
I forget how it works now, but I think the adapters tended to lower the compression which resulted in a power loss of course. This glow plug adapter head was actually made and was not a drilled out converted standard Cox .020 glow plug head. Now of course maybe this glow plug adapter head is not for a Cox .020 engine. it might be for a old K&amp;B or Ok engine near that size displacement.

Some old Fox .049 or .07 glow plug heads, and a couple of Holland Hornet 049 glow plug heads.

A Fox .10 glow plug head, the same plug worked in both the .09 and .10 engines.

The Gilbert company also used to make .07 and .11 engines. They had a different kind of glow plug head on their engines as well.

Earl, your collection is amazing. I keep thinking how neat it would be to have a display board of these glow plugs. I have seen antique car guys do that with spark plugs.

I found a McCoy Baby-Mac Hot Point Glow Plug with box.
The small "Baby-Mac" glow plugs were designed for the converted small McCoy engines at the time. They had a screw on cylinder cooling jacket, so they drilled a hole and machined a step or shoulder to hold the glow plug in when the cylinder jacket was screwed on. Towards the end of the McCoy Duro Glo diesel engines, they redesigned the cylinder and cooling jacket to use a glow plug insert. The cooling jacket held the glowplug in place. This was on the mcCoy .049D model engine. The cylinder and cooling jacket were not interchangeable with the regular .049 Duro Glo model diesel engines.
