RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Well guys after quite a few flights and several wheel landing and making me look real good I now have a two piece wing. Had to dead stick(which I should of let her go another 200 ft down wind)turned poped gear down and started to land very fast but controled. Then this stupid landing light just had to jump out in front of her and cut the right wing panel in half. Now Im in search of ekither a set of templates of the wing ribs or another wing for the Arc P-51. She will be a good winter project though if I find what I need though.

You gotta watch out for those Wild Landing Lights.. they will do it most every time...
A few years ago I witnessed a Byron Orginials P-51 on landing approach and a landing light jumped right out and POOF instant popcorn all over the runway. Nasty darn things those L L's. Course the Landing Light had to be replaced also, small consolation though.
Sorry for your loss !

I'm thinking about getting one of those planes and whilst this thread is an excellent resource, it's over 2,000 posts
This would be my first giant scale warbird (well, gasster warbird) so I'm interested in any feedback. I would most likely be using one of the newer lighter built 50cc such as DL, JC Engines etc.
How would you summarize the plane in terms of build quality, flight performance etc.
I have seen comments that question the recommended Robart retracts and there also seem to be some issues with fitting pitts mufflers within the cowl without cutting the living daylights out of it.
Are there other particular areas I should be careful?
Thanks in advance

The P-51 is one of the nicest flying planes you will have. I'm using the DA50. Not sure about the DL55. A friend has one and it has considerable vibration. Muffler wise I'm using the Keleo muffler. It is a function scale muffler. Works well, no problems. I would highly recommend the Sierra retracts for the mains instead of the Robarts. Also the wing needs to be modified in the retract area. Not strong enough. I have some drawings for the mod that have proved successful. I'll be glad to send them to you free if you like. The plane in either the ARF or the ARC is good except for the landing gear area.
Good luck
Chris

Thanks for your quick reply.
I might order the plane either today or tomorrow. The price is good at the moment thanks to the strong Aussie dollar!
I'd be grateful if you could e-mail me the details of the wing modifications. My e-mail is [email protected]
I have been looking at the Sierra retracts and they do look a lot nicer than the Robarts. The other thing concerning me about the Robart units is they are rated for 1/6 and 1/5 leaving me to think the 1/5 size is on the edge of their designed strength. There doesn't seem to be that much of a price difference anyway.

This is a great thread. I'm hoping to get to mine one of these days. Too many other projects have taken precedence.
I don't know if the subject has been covered already, but did TopFlite ever take the advice from this thread on the wing modifications for the retracts and incorporate it into the later versions of the ARF and RTC birds?

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I followed Chris's advice on the wing modifications and also ended up with the Sierra retract system. For the little bit of extra money it was well worth it because they have worked flawlessly. This flying season I managed to get over 5 hours in the air on my new P-51 and had no troubles at all with anything coming loose or breaking. The model is a really fun warbird because it is so well behaved - it lands as nicely as my Aeromaster Bipe and looks great in the air too boot. I powered mine with a DA-50 which I bought in a package deal and was out of warranty even though it had never been run. At 5 hours the Ei failed so I sent it back to DA for repair/replacement and they covered it under warranty even though it was over the time-limit. That saved me about 150 bucks. The engine is very smooth and the service from those folks is outstanding. Something to consider when you are pricing engines. I like this model so much I ordered the Keleo scale exhaust system for it too. Get one and you will have a lot of fun with it. A high speed low pass from a P-51 will bring a smile to anybody's face, and on the flight line, everybody is drawn to admire the beautiful lines of the "Stang". [8D]

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I've been flying my P51 for a little over a year now, powered by a DA50 with Keleo scale exhaust....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA4uWEgO8aI
...Unfortunately its just been deemed too noisey by the club I fly at. What other exhaust systems have people used with this plane? (I understand that the standard DA50 silencer is also very noisey)
Has anyone managed to fit a canester style silencer into the fuz - ie by relocating the tank etc?
Many Thanks
David Bevan

tell them to get a life!!!!!! hand out eye plugs!!!!!!!! man alive man you fly out in farm land. these gassers are a bit barky. war birds should be!!!!!!! i would think your club would be thankful that you grace their field with such a find look'in plane. now i'm not bangin' on the club thing but sometimes they get all caught up in all their rules and laws, and politics, etc. all they do is cause the stress level to go sky hi and take the fun out this hobby!!!!!!! i do see the need for rules as to conduct and things that are not safe but all the crap that goes with it sometimes is over the top!!!!!!! no one please call me out on this because it is just my 3 cents worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it took only one homeowner's noise complaint here in the USA, to city hall ,for our club to lose the field.
City hall caters more to the taxpayer base that it does to a non profit organization like an RC club.
In my opinion , I would try to find out with your club, who's making the complaint. Most of the time you can re-arrange your club flying hours, to meet your neighbor needs. Also what it worked for us for a while , at list, was to introduce your club to your neighbors via a free club sponsored event with free food and flying. Most people after they find out what a great bunch of people belong to the club, they're willing to tolerate bit more noise than normal.
If , on the other hand, all your effort are go invane......you can always convert your P-51 to electric. [sm=52_52.gif]
I am fortunate that I can fly my "stang" here at our new field WOT with a Bisson muffler. The noise in a low WOT pass is amazing, like a Roar, and everyone turns and look and droole......You cannot fly a GS TF P-51 without the compliment of a loud exhaust....it takes away some of the scale effect.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
good point doomking. going along with your point, NO one likes their piece and quite distrubed. i know i don't. if we fly close to houses we should consider our neighbors rights to the piece. but if our field is away out in the country then let er rip. and the noise thing in my opinion shouldn't be such large thing as long as a muffler is installed and some effort is made to be as less objectionable as possible, and not just an ave. to "enforce the rules by some r/c field policeman" maybe the muffler folks should step up here with quieter mufflers, but if not we as modelers need to and do our own mods to tame the beasts. sorry about going off thread here but if something needs to be said we need to say it!!!!!!

Well finally it took my lazy butt all summer to take picture of my beloved p-51.
Here are some for everyone's enjoyment.
Also Fuji I agree on what you're saying. Most often than not some club members have too much time on their hands, and they care more on the non flying aspect of club life, than the flying itself. I agree we need some noise restraint, but like you said if the neighbor are far and not complaining, stop busting people's chops about the noise., or turn the hearing aid completely off.

I recently purchased a Tru-Turn spinner for my TF GS P51 and it is really nice. They drilled the backplate for the mounting bolts and also the center hole to match my engine exactly (a Taurus 52cc). It's now very convenient to remove the spinner cone by a single end bolt, for example to inspect the prop bolts, instead of the eight screws around the base. Tru-Turn's spinners are expensive, but they are very good quality.

they are real nice!!!! I went with a dave brown spinner for mine. it also is nice, only a bit cheaper. they will also custom drill and cut prop slots to fit your spec. app. small charge. they both have 51 contour.
