Ok here we go....
Now that the season is almost over...at list for the mustang, I am thinking for this winter project to add a sliding canopy to my plane(good or bad idea?).
I am sure that this topic has been covered already in the previous threads, and since I am lazy and don't feel like to flip again through 88 pages , I was wondering if any of you would be interested in sharing your building process , maybe with pictures , to how I can make this upgrade somewhat easy.

Am going with the following :

Spychalla Cowl and the New Mod. TF Aerotech Canopy Kit and Gear covers soon as I can order them...
Otherwise the wish list is almost complete..
Just need Nav Lights, Airborne batteries, Bulk HD Servo Wires, tail wheel retract unit and bulk air line..

Am looking for some bulk light weight glass cloth like what Dan Parsons sold on his site several years ago.
I did find some 1 oz. at Ziroli's which may work. ????????????

Haven't decided yet on Flite Metal or Paint..... Am thinking paint as it would be easier to repair in case of a mishap and as I have the Behr Met. Silver on the shelf.

On the cowl from Spychalla are these still available? I would love to have one of these for the P-51 that im building this winter. Does anyone know how one of these fine units can be purchased....? Can you help me out GSNUT?

Thayer Glass looks good for me..

For the Spychalla Cowl .......... you will need to email Leo at [email protected] as they are not on his web site. These cowls are for the ARF and RTC TF Giant 1/5 sized P-51 D. Use the 5.5 in spinner with it.

See page 85 and 86 of this thread for his pictures on the cowl install...!!

Just checking in.....
Say some guys with the TBm p-40 and I must say, "I am happy I have the
bird that I have!"....

I am in the process now, of foing the gear reinforcement, and I am
also goint to be making a wing mod, that makes the wing in 3-pieces that allows me to
transport the plane with the gear left on and center wing on....

I will use the same method TBM uses on there warbirds..

THe cowl looks good, but for over 100 bones for it, I think I will pass...
I would rather use that for some digital servos and or headers for my 1/3 plane...

What's everyones opinion on using a servo reverser instead of mixing with the transmitter for the flaps on the P-51 ?

You don't have to use either.
All you need is a Y servo cable, and connect both flap servos to the same flap channel on RX.
Adjust both servo mechanically to get proper trow.

Cool I have one but I will keep it for others uses. I'm in the process of gathering everything to build the 51 before I start assembeling the 51. Can the same thing be done on other models aswell?

I don't see why not.
The only thing you have to make sure is that the servo need to be mounted in the correct direction, otherwise they will work the opposite way.

A sure way to find out is to hook up two servos with the Y to your receiver on your workbench and see when you flip the switch which way the servo will travel. They both have to travel the same direction and distance. Only aileron have to be opposite.
Your TF GS P-51 manual has detailed information to how to mount the servo correctly.

Were there is a will, there is a way!!...

I am installing cans in my 1st gen cap 580 right now (plane wasnt designed with provisions for them)
but that is quite a bit bigger plane....

I looked at my mystang and checked a MTW 75K(short fat can) to it and there is room....
YOu would have a short header, but, you could bring the some of the can
into the wing...

I think it CAN be done, with some minor fabrication....Lots less, then what I am doing now to my cap...
other than that, I haven't given it much thought.

Doomking is right. You can use y connectors for both flaps and ailerons. The flap servos need to have the posts pointing the same way and the ailerons need to be pointing opposite.direction. The manual explains that well. Great flying plane.

Good morning.
I 'm very close to finishing my TF P-51 with a DL-50 on its nose with a jtec muffler and Robart retracts.
Which way do you think is the best to power the 10 digital servos that are used in the aircraft?
I 've allready seen all the 89 pages of this topic but can you post some pictures of the general arrangement of all these in the fuse?
Hope that I 'll fly it in about 2 to 3 weeks so your help will be much apreciated...

Chris; I'm starting to push my P-51 around on the bench to install the Keleo exhaust and was wondering what length stand-offs you used and if you have any photos of your installation of that exhaust system. Did you cut into your fuselage to get clearance for the ends of the exhaust pipes and if so, how far back in there did you go? I'd appreciate it if you do have any photos if you'd post them.

I think it depends what kind of battery you are going to use.
I used two 6 Volt 5C cell packs for redundancy, 2400 mah NiCd each.
Since I used a G62 in the front I needed extra weight in the tail and that's why I used NiCd which are heavy and I used them to balance the plane properly. They are both installed under the wing plywood mount on the fuselage, where the wing bolts from the wing enter the fuse.

If you decide not to use NiCd, than weight distribution is not as effective as with the heavier packs, but still you should try to place the battery where it help the CG without adding extra weight.
Also, if your servo support it, I would definitely suggest using 6V instead of 4.8V for increase in torque and overall performance with the same electronic package.

I intend to use lipos and I wondered if one or two batteries should be used with regulator or I should use something like a power system e.g POWERBOX.
From your reply I consider that 2 lipos with regulator should be OK...

Regulators are good especially if you are running voltage higher than 4.8.
Use two battery for redundancy, and plug them separately to the receiver on two separate channels.
If one fails, the other one should bring your plane home.

I totally agree with the redundency in the model. Switchs and batteries fail the most, so as long as you have the room go for it. The increase in power is a benefit also. My servos for elev. rudder are under the piece of wood that the wing bolts to. My steering servo is just forward of that and the retract and throttle are around the air tank. Pretty much like the manual shows. I'm balanced where the manual shows and it flies great. Good luck.
