A-10 Project
Hi All,
I have for many years been wanting to model the A-10. The only kit I have found is very large and quite expensive. Add in the twin turbines and it becomes extreamly expensive. So, I have decided to scratch build one from M.C. Beauleiu's plans available through RC Scale Models.
I had the shaped parts laser cut by Tank's Hanger Aircraft Modeling. The parts arrived quickly and were of excellent quality. You can check out pics of the parts at Paul's site:
http://home.mindspring.com/~pdmarsh/...ewinder01.html
Be sure to check his scale rockets. They're awsome.
After starting to frame the center wing section, I learned the wing ribs were drawn wrong along with the fin/rudder ribs. I figured I had waisted enough time on trying to get everything to fit right so I had Larry at Jet Hanger Hobbies cut some foam wing cores for me which came out perfect and I purchased foam cutting equipment and cut the fin/rudder cores myself.
Here are some pics of what I've done so far.

RE: A-10 Project
Thanks Hisham,
I hope to post something new every week.
If all goes well, It should be done by June.
I'm having a hard time coming up with some short pipes for the engines though. Wish me luck.

What airfoil is that on the main panels? It looks almost like a sailplane airfoil, maybe FX60-100?
How big is this plane going to be? My flying buddy scratch built a sloper A-10 with about 60 inch wingspan. The thing I remember about it was it took a ton of lead to get it to balance.

Hey Rich,
I have no clue as to the airfoil. All I know is that is has a ton of undercamber and should give a lot of lift. It is 78". Not really giant scale but large enough for me. The balance is one reason I am building the empenage from foam. I may need to make the gun out of lead ;-)

RE: A-10 Project
Flypuck,
What did tanks get to cut the kit and how was the quality? This is a project Ihave been considering for a while and actually have drawn up half of my own plans for an A-10 thats about the same size, but am considering going with the cut kit and plans for a winter project.
Thanks,
Warren

Hey Warren,
The parts from Tank's was about $150.00. Email him for a quote. Nice guy and quick service. The quality of the wood and cutting is excellent! All parts were cut exactly per the plans and he has them on file so you dont have to send him your plans. This will save you a ton of time and is well worth the money in my opinion. Good luck with your project.

I am building one from the Keith Sparks plans from RCM. It looks pretty cool in the picture. I am still building it. Tank sells the short kit for it too - i think.

RE: A-10 Project
Hi There: Greetings from Minnesota! I am in the process of finishing the Keith Sparks A-10 Warthog too and am wondering if you have yours finished yet or have had the chance to fly it. I have mine nearly ready to cover and have it powered by a couple of FP .25 OS engines. I'm covering mine with olive drab monokote and am trying to keep it as light as possible. I have plans built about 10 models and this one has sure been a "different" one to build. I found several mistakes in the plans and had to really improvise to get it to come out correctly. One area of problem was the plans dimension for the trailing edge was off by 1/8 inch in thickness whre the T.E. meets up with the wing sheeting. Did you have any similar problems with your plans or were mine just a poorly copied set? I just thought I'd send a line your way and see how your Warthog was coming.

Hey Ron,
Pretty much what you see here is what I have done so far. As soon as I finish a part, I post it. I only have about 4 hours per week to work on it. Sometimes not even that much. Almost all of the ribs on my plans were drawn wrong. Thats why I decided to cut the flying surfaces out of foam. I'm just about ready to start on the fusalage so I hope the bulkheads are correct. Check out the link in the first post in this thread. Paul is making good progress on his A-10. Post some pics of yours here also. I'm sure everyone would be interested in seeing them. Good luck.
