Starting a Venture 60 .... Suggested mods?
#101
Bgorham, I mounted my ST .61 sideways to avoid the problems you're encountering. I have a small hinged door on the side to access the battery switch, charge outlet and fuel line. Fueling and defueling are a bit of a issue, so I'm still looking for a cool solution to use as a standard on my planes. I have a fueling valve on my Skybolt, but after only two flights, the jury is still out on them. an you use a fuel tank that exits straight out the front of the tank? This all makes the little grey cells very happy

i hear you on the sideways mount. i contemplated it, but like the looks of it upside down better. vanity over functionality ... not good huh!?
after looking at things further last night, I am pretty sure i can route the fuel lines pretty well with some creativity. I am going to get a check valve though just in case. one thing i will do is mount it inverted in my test stand and play around with the tank elevations like in the model, and see how painful it will be to start and idle it inverted. Should have done that before I committed on the orientation and the cowl layout.
live and learn ... again and again!

continued progress on the venture 60. she is starting to come together. I have spent the last week or so glassing my hardpoints and general chores. Here are a couple of bad pictures in the assembly stage. Time for final sanding and prep for covering. Thinking of a richard petty stp type covering scheme ... i am a nascar fan afterall ... and i think it will look pretty racey. All in all pleased with the progress so far.

Wow, talk about resurrecting a thread
I like the balsa cowl, seems to blend in well. It's difficult to transition from a round spinner to a square fuselage, but yours looks very nice. My Venture has a FG cowl and rudder servo in the rear with an ST .61. It seems to balance a bit tail heavy. You might want to do some preliminary balancing to see what yours comes out like. Here's a shot of my cowl. Enjoy the build, it's a great plane.

Sure would like to finish mine like it.

Super Chief, An FG cowl is a cowl made from fiberglass. There are many threads on making molds and using fiberglass, so I won't bore you with the details here. Sorry I didn't take pictures of the process 'cause I keep getting asked about. Just do a search for making fiberglass cowls, here or try utube for a video. Fiberglassing is a really useful tool to know in this hobby. Thanks for the compliment on mine.

I was so impressed with the way yours blended in on the sides that I could have sworn it was balsa with a real good sanding and filling job.
Anyway, I thank you very much for that and I too wish you would have taken pictures.
I also notice you have an interest in the Skybolt. I am retired (twice) and only in the past few years gotten interested in the hobby, so I am collecting as much info as I can so I can build a decent airplane at least from a kit.

super chief - yel914's airplane has an fg cowl post #99. the one pictured above is a balsa cowl that i built up with blocks and sanded into shape. you can get a little better look at it in the sanding stage on post 98. i will look and see if i have a couple more pictures of the balsa buildup.
