Redmoon. what is the output on that cell? The post on the solar cells indicated that he used the cells out of 2 calculaters from the dollar store. He the mounted them in the !QUOT!windshield area!QUOT!. If you have a 5 x 3/4 cell where are you going to put it? I seriously believe in the creativity of our community, but the cell would need to be the main wing. And it would need to be wired to the charge port. Whatever, it is your plane, have fun. Tim
The output tested on my multi meter says 5V DC in full sun (3.75 Indoors). The panel will fit across the wing span as a addational stablizer support. The plane will easily hold the very small amount of weight. I do plan on soldering it to the charge input.

I plan to have it finished this weekend. If it goes well I let you all know.

God Speed Fliers!...God Speed.
Well everyone I made it work. I have installed the solar cell to the two inner motors directly with a lever switch. I have flown this 4 motor AA for at least 14 minutes in daylight. And with the addition of the LED's (additional resistance to the outer motors) allows the 4 motor AA to turn easier. I also found that by installing the mini outlet for the LED's should one burn out I can just pull it out and replace it in a matter of seconds. I got the outlets at a craft store. Here are a few Pict's.

Way to go redmoon !!!

Look's like that just might be the ticket to longer flight times for sure... [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Keep us posted with your flight progress.

i love it when i'm wrong! nice work

are all four motors wired to the RX, or are the inner two seperate and just wired to the solar cell?

just out of curiosity, are the two outer motors from the AA Jet?

I maidened the orange plane as a bipe to ensure it did not need to be returned. After a couple of minutes it became clear that it was a winner. I took the lower wings out immediately, and glued in the stir sticks to tie the wings to the body. I took it out for a test flight and it seems to be very responsive. I normally don't mod them until they get sluggish in bipe mode. Now I need lights. Tim

For those of you useing landing gear, If you used a v shape to your axle. You could put a wing between the wheels. I'm thinking of trying something similar, but I fly over grass 95% of the time. I would have to make a set of skis that could handle 3 inch grass. Tim

redmoon,

Nice job. I'm amazed the outputs are holding 4 motors that long. But if you got one that will do it then go for it. All won't be lost if they do blow. You can still do the Mosfet replacement.

I had thought about solar 5 years ago just before I took a rest from RC. Voltage wasnt a problem, getting enough current to run everything was. Servos, big Rx's......NiCD's.....
There weren't lipos then or pager motors being used.
They had some cool flexible solar cells. VERY expensive. Would have been great on a wing though. Somewhere around .040 thick. The current output was only abt 35ma.

Glad your project is working out. Keep at it!

Because first in some areas it's hard to find and second some people don't know any better.

Yes, it's VERY steep IMHO. They are not worth $60 to me...

Yup, what Tommy said... ^

That and the eBay selling collective (eBorg)... think that if a product is in high enough demand they can charge what ever the heck they want to. Do your homework before buying on eBay, there are some fantastic deals and there are some fantastic scams as well. []

TrU just got new stock of 06 bipes and jets. Had some Storm Launchers
too for $79 with no battery pack available. And some two motor SL mini's
that look like an AA made into a SL. Never seen them before.

This plane has turned out to be my best glider yet and floats at about
a foot drop for every 20 - 25 feet with weights. Should fly nice with the
AA guts and should be a thermal grabber.

Tony,

Could you or someone else suggest a possible substitution for a N1448 diode? Crap Shack doesn't have them.

Thank you,

Ben Minor

thats a nice looking flyer , ,I have a firebird commander2 and yesterday in a 5 mph wind I couldnt bring it down to land so easy, it just climbed upward, thats the trouble with a high lift wing 2 channel no elevator.use an elevator.

Caught up in a good thermal does get the adrenaline flowing...
On another AA like this I had it trimmed so that in a right turn it would make
a dive holding the stick with the no throttle/ turn mod. This would help pull it
out of an uncontrolable thermal. Also the wing being fastened to the fuselage
with rubber bands makes it easy to adjust for different angles for steering.

I wished I would've gotten that Firebird instead of the mini Ventura- about the
same price too. Need a wing.

I know those Aero aces are cool litle planes, they just need a better charger wire hook up,I hadmine up at about 150 feet ,it looked like a Monark Butterfly I can almost get it to loop if I porpus it enough. I called the techs about the chanels and what Numbers are A B C,they never could answer me on that one.

Dr. Ben

Yes, the RS 1N914, 1N4001 just abt any signal diode will work.
RS has them 10 for $1.30.

I've finally gotten complete loops out of an AA. It's the foamie with the built
up balsa wing and it takes a lot of up elevator to do it. Low throttle mixed with
off just to keep it level or it will porpoise like crazy but once you gain altitude,
full throttle into a breeze will send it into a full loop.

arghhh!, micro.... looks like your Twinkies squeezed us out![:@]
good luck in the playoffs!

GO TWINS...I am originally from MN.

Neurotex, The thing that you saw at TRU was a XPV for use on land or air , No water... I have read that it flies OK. but it is no SL. I love my SL it flies alot different than AA. Now I need to make some lights it , with 7.4v my options are wide open.

Red, Very nice job on your creation. I hope you got some 6401's from Tony because sooner or later you will need them. Good news is with all of the soldering practice you've got it souldn't be that hard to do.

What kind of effects will the solar panel have the rx/battery? Don't lipo's typically use a pulse charging system?

I found some (3.7v 160mAh @ 4.2 grams) lipo's on e-bay. 5 for about $30 shipped from UK. Will these batteries work in AA's or is to many mAh for the rx.

The lights I have weigh about 1.3 grams. I made 4 sets over the weekend and I have sold 3 allready, Thank You. I have 1 set left that I will sell on e-bay . I will have to get more LED's I ran out

Djstinger

Those cells will work fine. I'm not sure on the weight though. They are a bit heavier. The stock AA is 3.75gm. But it will negate having to use a nose weight. Good trade off.
It will take a little longer to charge. The Rx will only draw (ma's) what it needs so you'll get longer flight times.
