Default Ralph's G-26 (Rcign1)

Just wanted to get on here and repeat what everyone else has said when they bought an engine from Ralph Cunningham at RC Ignitions. This is one great looking little engine. Thanks Ralph, as soon as my muffler gets here I'm going to wring this little guy out some!!!

Now you've gone and done it Ralph... another fellow R/C'r has become addicted

You will not be unhappy with the performance of that G26! Can't wait to hear your first few reports. Take the time to adjust the carb as per Ralph's instructions... it's worth the time. Looks great!

Guess you know the song "Happy days are here again", as any engine from Ralph brings nothing but smiles

What are the peak static RPM's on some popular props? What does it weigh?

Joe,
According to Ralph, the ONLY prop for this engine is the Mejzlick 18X6 (9000 RPM). I plan to buy one as soon as funds become available. $45.00 for a prop, OUCH (On a 1.20 size plane that's expensive, I wouldn't mind giving $45.00 for a prop for a 100cc engine though, only at that price it would be made of wood.....)

Brian,
My JBB won't be as fast as an USL. The wing is much thicker. I had a JBB with a 3W 24 on it, it had good power too but due to the design, is not very fast. I'm pretty sure my dad's us 40 with a TT.46 pro could out run it, but it won't even come close to out-performing it.

Birddog,
I read the instructions to the letter, and will follow them, My concern is, how do you adjust the needles with the engine running? With Ralph's carb rotator block the screws are on the bottom angled back toward the prop. It's going to be very tricky.

Thanks for all the replies guys, keep em coming. As soon as I get to fly this baby I'll let everybody know how it went.

The Mejzlik works best, others will work just fine with a little less thrust and rpm...

I just put a Ralph G26 in a 1/4 scale world models cub. Ralph shortened the hub so it would fit in the cowl. Motor fits perfect, had to cut out a hole for the carb and the bottom for the sparkplug and muffler and for cooling. Motor runs great, just having some problems adjusting the high needle. Needle is close to the prop. I need some suggestions on how to set the needles. I have it close, but not sure.

Thanks
Ellis

High should be set 200 RPM below max, set with a tack... Low should be "Just" above where it hesitates a little when you go from low to high throttle.. My G26s run perfect at those settings.. Brian

Gimble, did you reinforce the firewall any? Also, it looks like the servos are in the stock location, any balance problems?

Don't adjust the needles with the engine running. Usually a screwdriver blade thickness at a time adjustment along with a tach will do the job.

Safe Flying!

Bubba,
I put both elevator servos in the tail just like I did on my 3W powered JBB. Havent checked the balance yet, never did check it on the 3W. I forgot to do it before the first flight and it flew good so I left it alone.

Blikseme, thanks for the tip on adjusting the screws, mine are facing the prop too, I was woondering how to do it.

GB
Also, I pinned the firewall with dowell rods (3 per side when I first built it with a O.S. .91FX) bit that's all. It should hold up fine.

I have one of Ralph"s G-26 engines on a Ultr stick lite . Flies great. Then I added a Macs tuned pipe , 10,000 rpm smooth as silk. Now you really have a head turner at the local field.

Try adding a Macs tuned pipe. 10,000 plus rpm and smooth as silk. On a 10 1/2 lb. ultra stick lite it defines unlimited verticle. Thinking of getting one of those recording altimeters a pair of binoculars just for fun.

Yes Ralph is a Great Guy and does outstanding work. I have many engines that he has done his conversion to and have never been disapointed. I started dealing with him about 12 years ago and had lost touch with him and now I see he is posting here. It's great to see he is still doing engines. Thanks Ralph and now that I know how to get in touch. I have some more engines that need some attention.

Guys,
flew the JBB with Ralph's G-26. WOW WOW WOW!!! AWSOME! It runs great. One thing I thought was funny, and it may just be me. But when starting with the choke on, it never fires and dies, it will hit and kick back, then when I take it off of choke and flip it it takes two flips and it's running. It has plenty of power, did some hovering with it, also made some high speed passes. Making due with a home-made muffler until my abell muffler gets here. Man this thing sure is loud compared to my 3w-24. Did I mention that this engine is awsome??

More soon.

Knew you'd like it Gimble and it will only get better as it breaks in. Thanks for the update!

Thanks Birddog,
I plan on getting some more time put on it today. I also ordered the Mejzlik prop from Desert Aircraft yesterday. As soon as that gets here I'm going to borrow my buddies tach and fine tune the needles.

Excellent plan to do some more tuning after you change the prop. I found out from experience how important that is. Let us know how you like the Mejzlik.

Birddog,
I flew it today and almost wrecked the crap out of it. It died on me about 3 times. The last time I cranked it, took off, pulled to vert., and at about 150 ft I let out of it and it died. It stopped, flipped over and headed straight back down, over the runway still. I hauled back on the elevator and thought it was going to plant itself right there in the middle of the runway, I just knew it was gone. It leveled out just as the mains hit the grass. It rolled about 10 feet on the mains at about 50 mph (guessing) and took back off. I glided it down the runway and landed right before the corn. Gave it right rudder, up elevator and right aileron to turn it away from the corn and stop. It spun around, tipped up on it's nose and fell back on all three wheels. [X(][X(][sm=drowning.gif]Guess I'm flying a free plane now because this one should be gone. I walked down and got it, let my nerves calm for a minute or two, cranked it and kept on flying. I guess I'm not giving it enough time to warm up when I crank it. I just start it, clear it out, taxi and take off. It's in the air doing what a Big Boy does in less than a minute after I start it. That happened three times today, all on the first flight after it had cooled off some. (10 to 20 min between flights). I need to be more carefull!!

On a lighter note, I got my buddies Fromeco TNC tach this evening and started it back up. About 7500 RPM is all I can get on an 18X8 Menz S prop. I think the 18X6 Mejzlik will turn a lot harder! According to what I have read on Ralph's posts here, The Zenoahs love RPMs so at 9000 with the Mejzlik it should make more power and thrust than with the 18X8 Menz. at 7500, and should be happier. What do you think?

If it dies in the air one of us is doing something wrong, send it back...
An 18-8 prop at 7500 makes less thrust than an 18-6 at 9000...
I'm leaving Saturday the 12th, if it gets here before that I can send it right back....

Gimblebender, ever since I read your earlier post (you said) you flew a maiden without checking the balance....I consider you a lucky man. Better lucky than good, I've always heard.

To anybody flying the Ultra Stik Lite with Ralph's G-26, reinforce the firewall. My motor is sitting in the middle of a pond now because the motor pulled the firewall right out. The wood that Hangar 9 uses is not very strong and the added vibration pulled it apart. Ralph's motor is great but I can not say anything good about Hangar 9. By the way, I landed the plane without a scratch with no motor on it. Horizin wouldn't help me at all, they said to chop up the plane and they would look at it. The motor was considered collateral damage and the would not help me replace it.
