Are there many of us using Mobil DTE light oil?
I changed to it a while back because I heard it was scimilar to turbine oil and but not as harmful . I have now used 400 litres of fuel at 5% in Wrens, jetcats and simjets and I thought I would take a look in one of the engines I have run it in to see whats going on in there and the engine its spotless with little sign of any carbon build up at all. The bearings are also perfect. Its less than half the cost of turbine oil too!

Can't get DTE in Hawaii, but we have been using Chevron's brand, "GST" for the past year in a dozen engines. You're right, it's cheaper and it doesn't stink and water the eyes like turbine oil. A 5 gallon pail was around $55. It stays clear and won't turn brown in the sun like some turbine oils.

Jason,
I have only ever used DTE light in my supersport. It has about 14 hours on it now. No problems at all but I have not looked inside it. I'm well into my 2nd 5 gallon pail. Do you have any photos of your engines inside? Thanks for your input about the bandit.

I only have one quart left of 2380 and then I'm switching to Mobil DTE or it's equivelant . I've seen it mentioned here and on the GTBA forum on Yahoo and people are using it with great success . It's supposed to be less nasty to our health and a lot cheaper than aviation turbine oil . I spoke to Wren yesterday about this very subject and they said lubrication ain't rocket science . As long as there is some lube of some description , the bearings will be just fine .
I think Jason's experience should be a green light for other people who want to try this.
Now , just waiting for someonew to pipe up about warranty[sm=rolleyes.gif]

I'm on it - got a fresh supply (5 gals) ready! Myself and another local turbine driver made the decision based (1) on the nasty things organophosphates can do to you, and (2) the positive experience of a couple others (as yourself) with extensive run time on their turbines using DTE Light.
My supplier is
[link=http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMAKA=60002300]MSC Undustrial Supply[/link] and I also got a 5 gal. [link=http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMAKA=65362212]dispensing jug[/link] from them.
Oh, and if you want to get pissy about how you decant/use the oil from the jug, there are these [link=http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=22]Nalgene 1qt bottles[/link].

Good info. I believe I had a serious reaction to the turbine oil and stopped flying for this reason.

Hi Jason,
I just read about some of the symptoms of exposure to organo-phosphates:
Personality change
destabilisation of mood,mood swings
increased tearfulness, irritability and aggression;
impulsive suicidal thoughts;
rage
Scary stuff.............................[X(] You'd better get me some of that tree-hugging oil please.

Jason,
when you switch back and forth from your jetcat to your wren engines, do you use different mixes or stay at 5%? Seems almost 3 oz per gallon more for the jetcat, I would not want to coke up my SS or 44. Any thoughts?
Spartan, DUDE! I got all those!!!! J/K!!~)> Cure==fly more!

Sans the suicidal thoughts turbine oil will make me have a personality just like my wife when it is "that time of the month"--- [&:]

I have always used 5% in all my engines which include the MW44, MW54 and the SuperSport as well as the jetcats and Simjets. Millions of hours on the lot and never a issue. Ive seen people with green goo for one engine and normal stuff for another... can't be doing with that.
Jason
Spartan,
the only sell DTE light in 20 litre cans and although the oil is already many many thousands of years old, I do not think it will have the shelf life needed for you to use it all.... hohoho

I'm ordering some Tuesday so I'll get you some.

There was some scuttle about this a while back, and I'm glad to see more guys are using the new stuff with great success. I've worked around the standard turbine oil for a long time and always wear disposable gloves when I deal with it and use eye protection, it's nasty Hazmat sorta stuff.
When I first started out flying for a living I worked for a place that made us pilots check the oil before parking a plane for the night, as we rarely had maintenance support at the out stations. We used to get Exxon 2380 ALL over the place, and I really do hate to think how much I was exposed to it in the past. I remember one guy spilling a whole quart all over himself. It wicks into your skin pretty quickly even if you wash up right away.

Been using/recommending it for years, zero issues having inspected/serviced the insides of many engines with hundreds of accumilated running hours, no warranty issues and highly recommended.

Thank you for your kind words. Would you like a thick ear ?
I wouldn't be at all surprised if turbine oil can cause acute rheumatic reactions in some people. [:@]
I must put some latex gloves in my field box

Andy, you should see the machines the manufacturers have that test the sidewall of the combustion chamber to test what oil has been used. It's massive, but once they plunk down the $15,000.00 for the machine, the individual tests are only about $300.00 a pop.

If it is so good why don't the engine manufacturers approve it to use without voiding warranties?

Thanks Sara
I have been following all of the threads on the toxic oil issue am am glad to see a turbine manufacturer step up and officially approve something less toxic.
For the sake of the health of all of us, we can only hope that the rest of the industry follows your lead in approving less toxic oil.
