Default ESC for turret traverse

Anyone know of a good small esc I can use to control the traversse function on my tansmitter? Low amperage.

Perry:

You want a reversable, so one of the aircraft ones is out. Robotics suppliers usually has cheap good ones for the antweight microbots:

Robot Power's Scorpion Mini is discontinued - was $30 (replacement Mini-2 under test)

SozBots SOZDSCR2.3-X is discontinued - was $58 (could be snapped to yield 2x controllers at $29 each)

Barello doesn't make one under $50, and neither does dimension Engineering

Duratrax has the Sprint at $30, and is available - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAMN7&P=7
HiTec has the EZXR-2 at $35, its also available - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDEM6

Then there is used ones on eBay, just make sure its usable with your radio.

I thought there was a way to hook up a servo controller board... like pull the casing, and where the board is wired to the motor, replace those leads to the servo's motor with the one to your traverse motor. Anyone done that? Got a link?

A 3-way (on-off-on) switch beside a servo should be enough... long as the voltage is right going to the traverse motor. Dead simple, cheap too.

You can take the stop out of a servo, it will rotate 360 degrees and has proportional speed.

Here's a link for modifying a servo for continuous rotation

Thanks all for the responses, especially all the info WhiteWolf.
I could convert a servo but the HL one is much lower profile and is already installed. The Tamiya traverse mech came with a 3 position reversable switch for a servo but I need finer resolution for targeting.

I'll try to pick up one of the above ESC's
Thanks again,
Perry

If you have a dead/twitchy servo from other projects, grab the electronics from it and use it to drive the HL motor. As long as the servo had a comparable size motor, it will be fine.

Darkith, that's a great idea, I have a few spares. Might just do that.

OK, I reworked the servo board and it works great! I have to keep the pot on there don't I. It would be convenient to cut it off.

There almost no end to the usefulness of a servo, I used one once to power a minisub, it gave proportional forward and reverse.

So, I am done with this. I took an old JR servo I had and pulled the elec's out. I soldered on a connector for the output and mounted the board in the base of the servo case. This will allow me to use double stick foam tape for mounting. Mounted the pot on the the board with 2x tape.
I tried this out and it is awesome. regular HL traverse speeds at full stick and since it is proportional I can move the turret extremely slow with precise adjustments.
Thanks again for the sugestion Darkith

Yup, you can replace the pot with two appropriate resistors to make things smaller. Measure the value from the wiper to each end, and sub in a match. The values should be equal, and probably around 2.5k (for a 5k pot), so a pair of 2.2k or 3k resistors will suffice.
If the match isn't quite perfect, a little trim will fix it.

They're not carrying any current, so 1/4 watt will do.

Guys, I suggested that reworked servo guts...

Ah, c'est la vie...
