Default Shaft Straightening technique works

thought i'd share a discovery and give something back. Of course, i'm sure someone has already tried this. i've only tried this on an outer shafts so far.

get 2 pieces of acrylic sheet...3/16" or thicker for rigidity. i cut mine about a 1/4" short of the full length of the shaft, 3.5" and about 5" long. Roll the bent shaft between them. i put them between my hands and rub together for about 30 sec at a time applying steady pressure and watching the gear to make sure it plumb. i've straightened a few like this.

check the yellow pages for a sign company. preferably not a sign shop in a retail shopping center next to starbucks but a shop with manufacturing capabilties...they have tons of the stuff laying around and considering you only need 2 little pieces. i have tons at my shop...if anyone needs some, let me know.

Quattro--

Good discovery ! Here's another insight of someone's idea for bent shafts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKLy_8DAdQE Me, I just buy a new one...Lol.. I'am convinced I wouldn't be able to get that true straight effect.

Happy Holidays--

I use that technique at work to straighten soft metal wire and rod, so I figured it would work for the inner shaft. If it works for the outer shaft as well, I'm impressed and I'll add that to my list of Tricks. I'm surprised that the outer will go straight because it's made of some pretty stiff stuff. But I'm not going to argue with the guy who is making it work. Thanks for the tip!

Great idea, I'll have to try that. I've got one with the slightest wobble in it that when it's in the bird shakes the machine like crazy. If this works I'll be one happy camper.

Titanium.

My Titanium inner shaft works great ! ! Still on the first one for a couple of months now. Shane is getting similar results.

I found the right diameter for the outer, but $ $ $ $ ! !

Rice,

How did Your C.F. outer work out?

I'm still on my CF shaft vacation [8D]. My heli was out of commission for 2 weeks and i'm still trying to make up for loss flying time . I'll get back on to it soon.
So again I must ask you WHERE can I get a titanium inner rod? GARY. The only other thing I have found was some tungstin welding tigs.

I finally tried out your trick today and it worked GREAT! I used my glass table and a cleaver... yes a cleaver, to roll my inner shaft strait. Thanks for the idea.

Eat2muchrice--

Since I've been following all your posts gradually in time, I've came to the conclusion that you have a great imagination...Good discovery AGAIN on the cleaver concept...

Take care,

This was an incredible tip! I made the two peices out of 5/16 acrylic and it took me about thirty seconds to straighten a CPP mainshaft perfectly! The two peices do not even have to be rectangular, they can just be odd scraps and they work! I had been rolling mine on a single peice and then straightening via eyeball and a vise. This is much easier and faster. Thanks!

I am not sure I understand the desire for a ti shaft. Ti is lighter in weight, but has a lower tensile strenght than steel. I you want pure hard strenght, stainless steel would be hard to beat. Of course this just means that something else down the line will break with a blade strike.

I never new Titanium had a lower tensile strength then steel. I've always believed it to be far surpirior. I even wear a titanium ring [8D]...... Guess I need to do more research on ti.
