Need help with Spektrum DX6i
#4
After my own initial frustrations & seeing others experiencing the same thing, I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.
I set up my Tamiya KT & Panther with a DX6i using the following connections between the DMD & AR6100 Rx:
DMD Rudd to Rx Aileron
DMD Thrott to Rx Elevator
DMD M Gun to Rx Throttle
DMD Turr to Rx Rudder
Please note that I use the transmitter right stick for throttle & direction; left stick for turret rotation, main gun elevation, & firing the main gun & machine gun.
On the transmitter menu, I set them up as aircraft, & set sub trim throttle @ +60. This allows me to operate gun elevation by moving left stick half-way in either direction, fire the main gun by moving left stick full up, & fire the machine gun by moving left stick full down without having to move the trim slide.
Hope this helps.
Some additional info: After experimenting, I found on my Panther I can also slide the left stick trim all the way down, & set the sub trim throttle @+85. This also allows me to operate barrel elevation with half stick throw, while full stick throw in either direction will operate the guns. Don't fully understand how all this works together yet, but experimenting with the stick trim setting & sub trim setting seems to be the key if you want to fire the guns with the stick, which is what I prefer. As far as I can tell, there are multiple combinations of settings one can use to compensate for the differences between DMDs. My experience is that no two DMDs work exactly the same way.
I do have a problem with the DX6i however; I like the radio, but its memory is not large enough to hold all of my R/C projects. Guess there's another radio purchase in my near future.

I want the right stick to move the tank fwd and to turn it.
Would that be done by switching the connections on the RX or adj the settings in the TX?

Your setup works the way I want to drive the tank.
Thanks!
But my machine gun doesn't fire anymore and neither does the main gun.
This is killing me!

I left out one key piece of information earlier: set the transmitter sub trim THROTTLE setting @ +60. Leave all other settings @ 0.
Make sure all other transmitter settings are at default, & set up the DMD to the transmitter per Tamiya instructions. If you still can't fire the guns, try playing around with the sub trim throttle setting. Good luck.

That worked for the M Gun but not the sub machine gun.
If I put it to -60 then the machne gun works moving the stick down, strange.

I discovered these settings by accident, & really don't know much more about it. There's a lot to learn about the DX6i.
I double checked my Panther settings & found the sub trim throttle is set @ +50 versus +60 for the KT. Apparently there are variations between DMDs. There is also a narrow band in the sub trim setting in which both guns will operate; if I move my settings for either tank in either direction, one of the guns will quit working while the other works. The trick is to find the setting at which both will work.

Okay. Now this is what I've got.
DMD 1 to Rx Aileron
DMD 2 to Rx Throttle
DMD 3 to Rx Elev
DMD 4 to Rx Rudder
Mix 1
Gear > Elev Act
Rate D - 125% U 0%
SW Mix
Fires Machine Gun
Mix 2
Gear > Elev Act
Rate D - 0% U -125%
SW Flap
Fires Main Gun
Now I have to figure out how to drive and turn the tank with the right stick.
Not sure I can do it, but now I'm getting somewhere.
I feel like I'm talking to myself, maybe I am, I think I'm going crazy!

Thanks Dazman. I just got my DX6i yesterday and have been struggling with the setup. The user guides on the DAK site were only marginally helpful as the DX6 seems to have a totally different menu system to the DX6i.
With Dazman lighting the way, here's my setup for my Tamiya Panther (bearing in mind that I have Throttle/Steering on the left stick and Turret/Main Gun on the right):-
I needed to reverse channels 1-4 as everything moved the opposite way to my old Futaba.
DMD 1 (RUDD) to Rx RUDD
DMD 2 (THROT to Rx THROT
DMD 3 (M GUN) to Rx ELEV
DMD 4 (TURR) to Rx AILERON
MIX 1 (FIRES MAIN GUN)
GEAR > ELEV ACT
RATE D-125% U-0%
SW AIL D/R
TRIM INH
MIX 2 (FIRES HULL MG)
GEAR > ELEV ACT
RATE D+125% U-0%
SW MIX
TRIM INH
I also plugged in an MCD 'ADD-A-SWITCH' circuit board to RX channel 5 (GEAR) and set up the TRAVEL ADJUST of Channel 5 (GEAR) to 125%. I can now turn on the front headlight by flipping the GEAR switch on then off. This doesn't seem to interfere with the MIXES using the GEAR channel (unless you leave the GEAR switch on!)
I'm going to add a Pico switch to channel 6 (FLAPS) so I can power down the tank by flipping the FLAP switch from the transmitter.
Hope this helps someone to set up their DX6i
Chris

Got it!
Okay I set her up like this:
DMD Rudd to Rx Aileron
DMD Thrott to Rx Elevator
DMD M Gun to Rx Throttle
DMD Turr to Rx Rudder
Then I checked the RC equipment as per the Tamiya book.
Set sub trim on the throttle to +40:
Main Gun fires throwing stick fwd.
Set the trim for the THROTTLE from the main screen all the way down:
Machine gun fires moving stick fully down.
Thanks
Chris!

Do you have instructions on how to do this and where to get the parts?

<div>I finally managed to get this thing done except the firing of the guns. In the picture below You can see Ch 3 (Thr RX), Ch 1 (Aile RX), Ch2 (Ele RX), and Ch4 (Rud RX). I cannot for the life of me get the main gun or machine gun to fire on the left stick. Remember this is configured like a HL (Lft = Turret/Elev; RT = Throttle/Steering). I'd like to configure the MIX switch for main gun and some other switch for machine guns.I cannot for the life of me get the main gun to fire off of any switches. I've left the machine gun on the left down stick but can't get this to work. Anything that I might have forgotten?
