Default Bashing an old trainer

I want to play around a bit with an old trainer I have. I have a PT-40 that I converted into a tail dragger, now I am thinking about cutting the wing and taking out all of the dihedral. I am looking for somethingmore than a standard trainer which I am getting close to the limit on. So I will flatten the wing, , move the CG back a bit and am wondering are there any other Mods I could make to it?

What about playing with the size of the rudder and elevator, is it too much to do too soon to put on larger surfaces?

Any other ideas - I could easily overpower it with an OS 61 SF rather than the .45 fx - what do you guys think?

manks
Make a low wing out of it[)] I changed a Quin Kadet to a low wing added flaps and it is also a tail drager. This is a copy of the Senior Kadet with sheeted fuse, next is to see if it will fly[)]

I did that to an Alpha 40 a while back. It was fun and flies great!

If you are going to cut the wing then finish the job Don, t stop at a flat high wing, droop the tips around the same amount as the dihedral was for anhedral. That will get you closer to neautral static roll stability.

Suggestion for the vertical surface. Keep the same outline of the combined fin/rudder but move the hingline forwards for a fifty to sixty percent increase in rudder area with a coresponding decrease in fixed fin area.

I bashed my trainer, after crashing it. It was a Laniar Explorer 40 that I put into a rail fence resulting in the second photo. I salvaged the wing and buitl a stick type fuse for it. I extended the tail by 1 1/2" and the nose by 2". Made a really nice flying plane. I lost it in the creek bed behind the field where it layed for about four months. In the mean time, I had a second wing, so I built another fuselage and flew it for a while longer before descovering the fence. That one trashed the wing so bad that I coppied and scaled down my 4*60 wing and cut most of the dhydrial out. That was a great flying plane. Untill "The Crash" I still have part of the fuselage and am thinking about building it out again.

Well I have cut the wing, and cut some new braces for it, I already converted it into a tail dragger. I am also thinking of putting an old, powerful OS 61 SF in the front, it will just fit. I will have lots of power for what will be a trainer bashed into a Stick.

I am not flying this week or weekend, so I think that I will have it ready to go when I am out a couple of weeks from now.

I will post a couple of picks soon.

Any particular reason why your planes are crashing so much?

With one exception, all of my crashes were the result of adheasive failure right at the point where the right and left thumbs attach to the brain. Yep, I did them all by myself. That and I've burnt 2 1/2 cases of fuel in the last 20 months so I've been in the air a lot.

I figure that if I want to set and look at a plane with no marks on it, I'll leave it home. There is only one pilot at the field that hasn't crashed a plane yet since I've been flying, and I'm not that far ahead of the pack. The one who hasn't crashed has been a member of the club for over 25 years and I've yet to find anyone who has seen him crash, or fly for that mater.
