four * 40 kitbash group build this winter?

Heres my idea, I have a spare 4* fuse kit sitting around,
I am tending towards bigger airplanes these days, But i am always guilty of starting new stuff when I should be finishing old stuff! I know I am not alone on this ! There seems to be alot of people building this kit, and modifying it. My idea was this...maybe we can come up with a decision of what to build as a group kit bash. I actually don't have a wing with this kit..not that I couldn't find one. So I would mainly be building a fuselage, that accepts a stock wing. Anyone could shorten, lengthen, or round the tips if they pleased.. Or add wire landing gear to the wing..wheel pants etc.
Now depending on any interest, and what we decide to build, We can try to find a cowl, canopy, etc. from different kits available. Mix and match what we use to build this thing. Now if it comes out looking like a 4* ..I am going to consider it a FAIL !
This kit can be made into everything from a vintage racer,a biplane (lots of extra work !) a warbird, civilian aircraft...etc. I think with a little work it could even be made into something high wing like a citabria.. or a parasol wing..
I am thinking of something that will start with a boxed up stock fuse, then we add, and possibly subtract a little from it. We will be making new pieces for turtle decks, firewall, bulkheads etc. and possibly more involved. At this point I am thinking of cowling it in, but some designs might allow it to be built open cheeks like the kit.
I am not going to tell you what I would like to possibly do ..until I see if there is any interest in it, and what ideas you have...this should be a relatively cheap kit to work with, and maybe even a few first timers will give it a shot. Access to a small scroll saw or bandsaw maybe handy....
Ok lets see if anyone is interested !

I wanted to bump this to the top to see if there is any interest in it this year ? there were a couple guys interested last year..and I thought if we could get a few people interested it might be fun.
It wouldn't have to be built overnight as a race. We could take our time and discuss what we want to do... shop for ideas and maybe share templates so it made for a fun project.
Anyhow if it sounds good or you have suggestions nows the time !

i'm in the middle of rebuilding a crashed and trashed one, not that i'm not interested in doing the group bash thing. i'm doing some different mods to mine like bigger ailerons, gear on the wings and maybe a couple of other things. see it under the "rebuild of a4*40 kit???".But the reason i'm responding to the thread is i was just on fiberglassspecialtiesinc.coma few minutes ago, and they offer a cowl for a cap 21 and wheel pants for the 4*kit or arf. something to look into if you're interested. the pricing was a bit high around 32 and 33 bucks each. not terrible.

Well I want to see how many show up, and what direction we want to go....the sky is the limit on a four *bash !
I have been watching some of your thread, keep that project moving forward !
Mr. E not going the twin route. I think we will stick with a single engine...

A fiberglass specialties cap 21 style cowl, some fancy pants (wheel pants haha), and a set of pitts or ultimate style wings...i think it'd be a hell of a sharp little biplane!

I measured my fourstar and the fuse is just shy of 3.5 inches wide..so we will have to keep that in mind when selecting a cowl or canopy, I did some browsing on tower tonight just to see whats out there.
having bashed a few kits I will tell you, its MUCH easier making the fuse taller by adding detail top and bottom of the fuse. when you start adding width it gets tricky, because if you have to widen the wing saddle it adds TONS of work to do it nicely. If you make it wide at the front and taper down before you get to the wing its not such a big deal.
Once we decide if we are going to fudge the looks of an existing plane. Or come up with a mixture of things we will be on the way. I have never built a high wing or parasol type fourstar. I do however have a few ww2 versions under the belt, and a vintage era racing plane or open cockpit is a real possibilty. If we do decide on a cowl that will of course add work and money. It also means that mounting the cowl will very a little depending on motor size.
Usually I build the wing pretty close to plans, to keep the gentle performance. Change of ailerons is easy, wingtips not problem..even dropping a bay from a wing is simple. I don't have a wing kit handy so I will concentrate more on the fuse. I am not sure where my finished fuse will go? possibly a friend , I am more into building it right now than worrying about the details !
I have also built the gear into the wings of a couple fourstars so I could give tips on that ...fixed gear that is, I am no retract expert!

I'm going to build a 4 star 40 and want to order a cowl for it. Do you know the height of the fuse. Thanks.

3 1/4" wide by 3 3/4" tall at right where the top sheeting starts.

I had sent a chat to Mr E and he had an idea of a high wing warbird? It makes more sense to talk here though, so I will answer here
Did you have a particular high wing warbird in mind? did you mean like a shoulder wing? Or something like a military cub, storch,
westland lyslander.. I must admit you went a direction I didn't see coming ! but thats good. Heck for a minute you had me thinking of a couple different WW1 parasol planes, fokker d8, or moraine saulnier. I guess making something super nice would be cool. But I thought if I don't get TOO crazy more people might join in... it would be fun to get some first time builders in here as well.
My original idea in my head was more of we all shoot for the same basic airframe , but your idea of more of an open interpretation would work also. And if others wanted to follow they could do follow close or take big turns in the design.

Yeah cubs are not very (rare)
So we are looking at something that looks like a ww2 era high wing... I am not sure if I am going to try and mimic an actual plane (loosely) or just try to make it look in the era. I am going to have to start laying it out in my head. Are you going to dive in right away or do some thinking first? hahah
I sure hope we can get some others to tag along....

I hope you can find a kit, I am always hearing they are a bit scarce at the moment?
I will probably sketch out something on my plans...I am still picturing in my head what kind of things I want to do. You caught me off guard on the build direction..but thats what makes it interesting.
