Prettner Calypso Plans...

I am looking for an original Modeltech Calypso ARC kit (willing to pay top $) or plans for the venerable Prettner Calypso.

It seems to me that as popular as you/we have made the Intruder, that someone would commit to build a hundred Calypso's for US consumption?

I owned on with a O.S. .91 in the mid-90's and would like to acquire another!

Calypso...

Okay, I have a ARC in the mail...what engine did Hanno use for this model at the 1983-84 Worlds?

I'd be willing to bet he eventually used an OS 61 rear exhaust... with a pump... maybe a red head? Just a shot in the dark, though.

Just reading report of 1983 Worlds in Pensacola, Hanno used Super Tigre S61. Dave

I believe he ran Supertigres until 1989 when he switched to OS and ran the Hanno Special. At the time, his 'prototype' Hanno Special was a modified RF and did not have the characteristic anodized red head.

Yep. Super Tigre .61 mounted at 135 degrees/7:30 o'clock with pipe down the belly. He wanted to demonstrate that you didn't need all the expensive hardware of the day to win at pattern. The story goes that some fellow competitors scoffed at his 'trainer' airplane. That is until he outflew them with it.

Calypso engine...

Ok, a Super Tigre S-61 side exhaust and pipe.

Does anyone have a photo of the bottom of the model?

Does anyone have photo or more detail on the motor and pipe?

Thanks,

I used to have a Calypso with a fox 74 on it. Excellent combination. Just today I was looking at the pattern page link and saw the pic of the Calypso's and figured out that the plane was a Calypso. Anyway, I picked it up at a swap meet for a few dollars, mounted an engine and flew the snot out of it for three or four years. I loved the way it flew and never used it in competition.

I would very much like to get another Calypso, preferably a kit if any were out there, or plans if I could build one with a built up wing instead of foam.

The other plane I would like to get a kit of would be the Fifty Caliber, twin engine. Did a kit ever exist of that?

Rusty,

you might want to check out CAsniffers article page:

http://www.trentonrcflyers.com/patte...structions.htm

Some of your questions are answered in the Calypso article.

Cheers, David.

You're saying ST S.61, that's the older round head engine, right? Like the one pictured below. Not the earlier G.61, the X.61 or the later square head S.61K, correct?

Hey Dave,

have you run your S61? Any tach readings? What prop does ST call for?

Do you also have an S40? I'm going to bench mine as soon as we thaw out... not quite there yet.

David.

Calypso information...

Doxilla...I reviewed the article yesterday and it is helpful. Here is what I am looking for:

1. Does anyone have a ST S 61 as pictured by Rainedave, for sale or borrow?

2. Information from the 1983 Worlds including photos, manuever schedules and spread sheet of competitor equipment.

3. Hanno used a fiberglass, wide blade propellor...what was the brand and size?

4. Any photographs of the bottom showing pipe mount, paint scheme to assist in my accurate reporduction?

Thanks for the posts thus far!

David, I don't own one. I got that image off the web. I do have a Schneurle Blue Head .40 that is pretty darn strong, even with its original muffler:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8130773/tm.htm

I was trying to figure out exactly which ST Hanno used. The one I pictured is called the S.61 and it dates to the '80s. This is the same time frame that they made the Comos (for Indy, I think). A Schneurle round head Como .61 probably performs the same.

Hi Rusty- Might be wrong, but I believe this is an S61 and matches what you are looking for:

You are all most helpful.

(SSSHHHHH) You guys go away and let me get that engine on buy-bay!

Hanno ran a 11" x 9" prop...any guesses as to whose?

How about a Super Tigre pipe laying around?

Macs will have the header.

David,

excellent link to your tach tests on the S40. I have an identical engine which I plan to run with a 6.5cc muffled Macs TP. It'll be interesting to see how much can be picked up RPM wise. I'm interested in three props: 10x6, 10x7 and 11x5. It'd be great if I can get 13.5K on an 11x5 w/ TP!

Powermaster would be 10% or 15%?

Rusty, sorry for temporarily diverting the thread.

David.

I have a couple MK 11.5~8+2 (one cut to 11) and a 12~8+2. Guess I need to try these on the SF/RFs.
