Re the 18*10 if it pulls at least 7500 on the ground then that will be comparable to an FX 160 which is good .I would just like that confirmed

I have 3 different OS160 FX motors and they all tach right around 8000 with the 18.1x10 APC.

According to ThrustHP the Syssa 180 makes 3hp on the stock exhaust @ 8750 rpm which is .36hp stronger than a G-26 according to the Horizon website.
I have a OS 140 pipe, not the best set up for gas but will run the engine on it and a custom header for tach purposes. I emailed ES tonight and asked which pipe he would recommend for the SAP 180.
Todd,
What is the center to center distance of the exhaust bolts and width and height of the exhaust port? Is it round or rectangular. I'd like to make the header and have it ready for when I get the engine.

Just wondering...did the SAP-180 in the Sundowner videos have the Muffler Tone Inserts installed? Do the insert just make it quieter or do they change the tone too? Thanks.

The sundowner did not have the inserts. It does change the tone a bit...but makes it noticeably quieter. At 25 Feet away it drops 9 db.
For other specifics, it would take a few minutes to go through all the other data...

Hi Todd,
When is the next speed run? Did you get the new prop to modify? How about an airspeed sensor (an Eagle Tree sensor is $42)?.
Are you going to chop the exhaust before we race? We leaned out the MVVS when I flew Sunday afternoon in Simsbury, it should be closer to 14,000 rpm now. I might need to make some cowls around my servos and tape the vertical stabs to clean up the airflow flow. The Sundowner looks faster and I haven't seen you dive into a down wind run yet.

I have to get one of those. In about a 25 degree dive its doing around 165...
Straight and level at full power its probably somewhere around 140. The engine is new and the prop is not loading it near enough. When I get the 12 x 16 pitch on there...then we will really find out. Right now I just want to get used to the little screamer.
We WILL race!!
Im too afraid to put it into a steep dive yet LOL!!!
Do you know if anyone makes a small diameter 18 pitch prop I can modify?

What a work of art! Keep up the hard work...I'm down for one!! The price point is very attractive for such enginering and quality and it is just GREAT YANKEE PRIDE !!!! Good for you. If a 60 is in the offering sometime soon I'm a player for that one too!!. Yahoo!!! Yankee pride and craftsmenship shows the way again. What a true DEAL for this thing.

You might want to try a solid carbon Bolly14X16 prop. They can be modified. Thrusthp; 3hp @ 8850 rpm, pitch speed 134 mph. "High speed prop for 1.20 use". Aero Products in Dacula, Georgia says they have them in stock. http://www.aeroproduct.net/
Ed Skorepa recommends the ES26G carbon pipe.

Right now...its turning a 14x14 APC on the ground at 9300 rpm and it has about 4 flights on it...basically a new engine. In the air its unloading somewhere around 11,500 - 12,000 rpm. This is on the stock muffler.
I might have to put a Skorepa pipe on this little guy. Im afraid the end of the pipe though will be close to the tailwheel LOL.
Thanks for the prop suggestions...I will likely try the Bolly and trim down...as I do not need the extra diameter.

The little Sdowner airframe is basically all stock too. I would really like to put some thinner wheel pants on it. The wheels and pants are HUGE for this plane. It takes the same size front wheels and pants as my AW Yak 73"!!! Actually the ones on my AW Yak were about 1 oz lighter in total.

Todd,
Maybe you can pick up some solid pylon wheels and make the pants out of balsa. 1/2" contest cut out for the wheel sandwiched between 1/8" sheet reinforced with 1/32" ply around the axle. You can use the profile of the original pant and they will look nice.

This is an all stock SAP-180HP, just like everyone else gets...even the muffler is stock...did not even cut the outlets shorter yet for less air resistance.
This is a project to push the SAP-180HP envelope for our own design purposes (of course there is some fun in there too).
Oh...Damon, maybe this weekend we can race....my dad fixed the firewall of the little sundowner 50 (he used the West structural fillet system) and epoxied where H9 forgot to. I should have looked it over more carefully...but now at least...there are no more worries.
Maybe this Sunday we will have to video tape a full throttle close in fly-by. need to race you flying wing!!!

Did final setup and ran engine in shop today, high rpm 82500, low 1600. Was harder to get gas pumped up to get wet engine for starting than on stand, maybe a little lean on low end ? The engine only has 1.5 hours run time. It was very windy 20 to 30 north wind, if wind goes down will go flying tomorrow.

Here's some more pic's of the motor installation for the Funtana 125. The only things I have left to do for the motor is cut the hole for the choke rod that will exit the bottom of the motor box and seal all the exposed wood. Then the electronic ignition will be next. I already have all the servos for all the control surfaces installed .
When I received my Funtana 125 the nylon control horns were missing from the kit. I contacted Horizon two weeks ago and advised them of the problem. The horns were out of stock. Today, I received an email from Horizon advising me the parts are in stock and being shipped. Now I have every thing I need to complete the build.
I'm still about 3 weeks away from having it done. I'm not going with the CA hinges, I"m going to use Dubro's instead, so I'll have to drill all the holes for it and re-enforce as necessary.
Regards,
Chuck
