I don't have a photo program, could I send a picture to some one and they make it small enough for an avitar?

You can use paint to size it down. Just select all and move it down till it reaches 85X85, or smaller.

and then save it? it seems that it save the white around it when I do???

After you resize it you have to resize the white part, too. Put your cursoron the bottom right hand edge of the white part, on the small blue square, and click and hold to resize it to the same size as your picture. Resize it till there is no more white left. Sometimes you do it and get a little white around the edge, if you resize one more click than you think you have to then that will fix it. Then save it as a jpeg or a gif. I recomend a jpeg if you have a lot of color in it.
