Default Edge 540 25, 45" initial review

Nitroplanes,

All I can say is NICE little plane! The Edge 540 25, 45" wingspan was packaged very well and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the more expensive items and engineering I didn't expect for $75. The wings are plug in with one small and one larger tube for strength and the servos in the wings are covered with plates for a clean look. Good looking cowl, matches up well, solid aluminum gear, solid tailwheel and metal clevices! I can't comment on the structural strength, I didn't have time for an in depth inspection, although it looks very sound. My manual is clear, but could use more text for a novice. I give the covering a B, a few wrinkles here and there, but I've had worse from Tower. Only suggestion is keep and eye on the covering. BTW - what is the covering and does it need low or high heat? If all of your planes are like this little guy, the S&H will not be a problem for me! Almost forgot, it even has an internal antenna tube running out of the rear. Now I just wish I had it together.

I bought two of them. I haven't put one together yet.. The manual mentions P.A glue. What the heck is that?

Thought I would provide you folks a build update on the Edge 25. I'm a drive-buy builder, so the entire "completion to fly" may take a few weeks. Anyway, photos are attached, and yes, I work on our dining room table! ;-). So far, the 25 is going together well with only a couple noted problems. The tank plug screw stripped from the backplate, so I replaced it with a sullivan stopper, and I didn't notice until this morning, but the right wing is missing the black trim ... QA oversight. And of course the manual could use some work. Outside that, a simple, easy build thus far. I would still like to see a bit more attention to detail on the covering, just hope it tightens up well.

Anybody know what size servos would work best for this plane? Full size seem a little large.

Nitro Dew... What engine are you using? I have one of [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EVOE100]these[/link] that came out of a mustang pts. Will this be toooo much to 3D this plane? It's not technally a .46 . On my 55" Kaos it has good speed with a 11x6 prop, but not good pull-out power. I'm thinking it might be good enough for 3D in this smaller 45'' plane.

Sorry for the late update guys, but I've been fairly disappointed with the Edge's flight characteristics. Long story - short, I'm taking the electronics out and have already ordered another ARF from my favorite supplier - WM. I had a TT 42 in the Edge, initial groung CG was good, got it in the air ... tail heavy, I got it down with minor wing damage. After repairing it and moving CG forward, back to the field ... very, very sensitive, even with low throws and 80% expo. This plane just wasn't worth the time to tweak, I didn't like anything about it, other than its looks. There are some very nice qualities about the model, maybe its poor flying ability was due to the flyer??? Just too small for me, I've learned my fit is between 40 - 60/90, nothing smaller. Good luck to anyone else who purchased the Edge.

Hey Nitro Dew I feel your pain... i have the same plane and put a O.S 32 in it... had a lot of power for me but finding the CG was a trick.... i had a very experience (25 years +) help me w/ this model... it took us 3 flights to get the CG but once we got it we both thought it flew well for a small plane... on a down side this was the first ARF i have ever worked on so the manual got me lost a few time... another thing we didn't like about it was the wheel pans they suck that is the only thing to say about it... we had to cut a whole in the bottom of the plane right behind the firewall just to have room to work... but i would buy another NP just not this one again, but it is still in one piece so we will see how next season goes

Bailey,

If this was your first ARF, don't get a bad impression of ARFs. Try any $100 World Model ARF and you will be pleased. I have a LA Racer, removed the wire main gear for a basic aluminum gear, painted the inside of the canopy black, and with an OS 46 it flies great. Nice low stance ... I get compliments frequently at the field. Airborne's WM photos do not compliment the models, but I love them.

Bailey,

If she has cut you off, what's there to lose? Get another plane ... let me assist - http://www.airborne-models.com/Index.asp

Maidened mine this morning, super responsive, even with low rates and -75%expo,to the point of being almost unconttrolable,it has a .40 O.S.LA with a 10x6 prop on it.
Ill try tweaking it a little but its one of them planes that as soon as it rolls down the runway you just know that its not going to fly well.
Oh by the way landed in the rough and tore the gear off.
Anybody gets this plane in the air and flying good, post the settings for us
please.

I gutted mine and found the perfect home for it - the trash! Nothing but World Models for inexpensive, good flying, quality models. Don't mean to rain on your day ... Good luck.

I have to buy a new prop everytime i fly it lol... but that just b/c i can land it on the hard ball but i have put bigger wheels on it and i will try those but i am kind of getting out of the 3D stuff i like to go fast i am looking at getting a racer instead. I could sell the plane if someone wanted to buy it lol... it is fun to fly but i would not suggest any getting this plane as a second plane like i did
