I think your always suppose to have the radio on first before hooking the battery to the plane. Many planes dont have a on/off switch, you just connect the battery and your ready to go.

By reading your questions,it tells me you are new to the hobby. It don't really matter if it runs or not. As soon as you let the 9 yr old try to fly, it's gonna make a great big debri field. OK, enough for the wise cracks !!! Seriously, if you get this plane going,& if you don't have any experience with this type plane, you WILL crash it !!! With no experience you have a better chance on winning the lottery than flying the plane. Do youself a favour & start out with a docile trainer !!! These retailers are interested in selling their products. When they say "Ready to Fly", it means an experienced pilot. Even a lot of experienced pilots couldn't fly some of these "jets". Go to a local flying club & get instructions. THESE ARE NOT TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just finished assembling a Catalina anddid as instructed, transmitter on, then battery. All went crazy. I changed out esc boxand all synced up and operated great. Contacted Nitro and they said to try leaving on longer to allow system to synce up, which I will do. I think I have a bad box but I will give it a try.

Do you guys have ANY experience flying or working on this type rc plane?? I'm looking at your post numbers (one) & that tells me zero experience. IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE, the best thing you can do before you hurt somebody is to; #1, put that plane back in the box, #2, get in touch with a local club for instruction on what kind of plane to get & LEARN HOW TO FLY. Once you learn how to fly,you will STILL be probably at least a year away from flying one of these planes. Sorry to be so negative;I just get sooo tired of seeing "newbies" come into the hobby & get something like these planes. They take them out & crash them & then give up or badmouth the hobby or manufacturer saying defective equipment & so on. This is one of the MOST enjoyable, full filling hobbies that I have ever done. I just hate to see guys get started out on the wrong foot & never get to enjoy it. My 2 cents

That's some what unfair and I think this topic is legitimate as a plane should not go nuts when you plug in the battery and have the transmitter on. Not everyone needs #1, put that plane back in the box, #2, get in touch with a local club for instruction on what kind of plane to get & LEARN HOW TO FLY. Many people learn on their own and many people have different ways of learning. If they crash their planes due to pilot error and blame the plane then that is bad but having a defective plane is another thing all together. Everybody has gotta start some place and don't tell me you have never crashed.

Also please make sure you when you turn on the radio, you need to lower the left joystick and then speed trim to the right of the left joystick.

No sorry it is VERY fair.

A plane needs a complete going over. Even an RTF one, by an experienced flyer!

All too often people treat RC stuff like they were toasters. This are relatively complex devices that need adjustment and TLC before flying.

The proper proceedure is to SEEK HELP FIRST, which is the correct advice.

Newbies don't do this and end up purchasing planes that are very ILL suited to the novice.... then they blame the vendors or sour on the whole RC experience.

You may not agree with this, but you too are a newbie with little experience dealing with novices.

The people with quite a bit of experience TEACHING newbies ( and I include myself ) have seen this melodrama played out time and time again.
Heck I saw it occur yesterday... a person with ONLY 3 Channel experience arrived to the airfield with an Art-Tech Yak 54 foamie...

The plane lasted all of 18 seconds before becoming a debris field.

That the plane started up when a newbie first turned it on resulting in damage, is if anything a prime example that they did not know what they were doing and needed help.

With electrics YOU MUST ALWAYS allow for this, because if you don't the results can be BLOODY.

This I know from first hand experience on a perfectly functional, tested and flown electric plane.

So as a novice please don't try to subsume the advice given by the more wizened gray hair set.

Example. Around 3 yrs ago, I was at a public park. A fellow came out with a new 3 channel park flyer. I was just sitting back, watching. He proceded to "charge up everything) He was reading the instructions as he went. (At least he did that.) He proceded to "try to fly it". It went up about 75 foot & then came almost straight down, at full power. It landed about 2 foot from a young mother with a little baby in a stroller. I seen it happening & had already headed that direction. I didn't make it in time. I shudder to think what could've happened. I talked to the guy afterward & he said," it just looked so cool in the ad, I had no idea something like this could happen!" If we can stop 1 newbie, from making this mistake ( maybe, next time, the plane might NOT miss the stroller). NOBODY wants to see that. I'm NOT blameing the"newbies" at all. I strongly feel the manufacturers should be made to put a "warning label" on these planes. "Caution: operating this device without close instructions can cause serious bodily harm or death!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, the manufacturers advertise "ready to fly", THEY ARE NOT!!!!!!!! I can't say this enough, ANYBODY interested in getting started in this hobby. Find a local club, you'll be suprised how much help you'll recieve. Get the proper instructions. It WILL make your introduction into "RC Flying" the most enjoyable hobby you've had. !! It will save you money in the long run, too. Enough said- my two cents Oh, yes I've crashed plenty of times. It has ALWAYS been at the local club airstrip, where experienced people were their to help. And, I did teach myself to fly !!!! So,I've learned the "hard way"!!!

hopely next time you see a newbie flying you help him out instead of just sitting back knowing the harm these things can do. You must be RAMBO of these forums

That is what we try to do here and at the field.

The problem is that the newbies BELIEVE they know better or are the exception to the rule.

Try telling a newbie not to do what they are about to attempt sometime.

No matter how politely you try, they'll go right ahead.

After a few crashes reality tends to sink in.

I too sat back and watched last week, ( but fortunately this was at our AMA sanctioned field ) before offering help.
I had said hello, etc. when they arrived, in the vain hopes that the newbies might just think to first ask for help or at the least a going over of their plane.

The few times people have actually accepted help like this, I've practically had to rebuild their plane at the field.

Usually by the time they see all the effort I've put in, they start to realize that there is more to this than they THINK they know and it becomes easy to get them into the training programs.
