NP may have given you are correct number.

You may have received a tracking number that was previously doled out by the Postal Service, but was never "claimed" ( there was never a package sent out ) by someone else.

I've seen this happen before, and my mechandise still arrived just fine.

Give it a few days and if the numbers don't change PM John again.

I've never been able to track CRAP on the USPS's website ever...it never works for me...

Normally by the time I see something on the USPS web site, my package has already arrived!
