OS 160 Shortening stock muffler

I have a H9 Cap 1/4 scale and is trying to install the stock muffler. I would not fit until i removed the center extension portion of the muffler. I was wondering what this would do to the engine? I was told that this will shorten the life of the engine. Will i gain or loose power by doing so? Any info would be appreciated.

thanks
Smokey

Smokey,
Your poor 160 will soon be "smokey" if you run it without the extension in the muffler. That large expansion chamber is necessary for proper operation of the engine and, in particular, your engine will overheat very rapidly running in that configuration.

poor 160

The way the bottom of the firewall is set up does not allow me to install the extension portion of the muffler. I originally had a slimline pitts muffler but this was too loud for my flying field. I was using an APC 18x8 prop with 10% cool power fuel. Can you recommend another pitts style muffler? How about putting a Jtech snuffler at the end of my stock shortened muffler? Can doing so increase my muffler volume area? I'm just looking for ideas to keep the engine running good and quiet.

Thanks
Smokey

I've never tried that smokey, so i really have no idea; however, that smaller can is going to make an aweful lot of back pressure, far more than the engine is designed for, and i really don't think its going to work.

You might contact slimline, jtec, or similar to ask about a "quiet muffler" for your engine that will fit.

larger prop

I will try a larger prop to slow the engine down. Can you recomend a particular size to do so? I like APC brand if you have any suggestions.

Smokey, I'm sorry, i dont understand your question? Have you got a muffler working onw?

prop

I shortened the muffler and it fits nicely in the cowl. My question now is what prop to use to try to slow the engine down in hopes to keep it cool. Apc brand would be preffered.

Smokey,
no prop in the world will protect your motor from that shortened muffler. PLEASE DONT FLY IT.
