Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
Hey guys, been a while since I posted in this forum...
Thought I'd share one of my latest projects with you - a homemade rat chopper.
It started one day, as it always does, with a cup of coffee as I was looking at all the junk I have laying around.
Yeah... there's that old bike I was gonna do something with one day.....
I decided to drag it in to the shed and stripped all the bits off it and cut it in half...
Added a few bits of tubing here and there, and some old apehangers I had made ages ago for a scooter project that never got finished and after a while it looked like this:
Well that was fun, so why not build something a bit more serious......
I got hold of this old steel tube frame and thought it had some useful bends in it that could come in handy.
Didn't take long before it was all cut down to useable pieces
And so began MK II of the chopper

RE: Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
I made some chopper style front forks
Using the headtube from the old Razor chopper
I've got a larger front wheel for it by the way
To be continued........

RE: Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
Here is something I built when I was like 16, the engine was out of a two stroke rototiller. The bike moved pretty good, topped out about 30. It had no clutch, the sprocket was welded directly onto the crank, you had to walk forward and hop on to start it. I used to ride this thing to school and back... easily the coolest thing at the bike racks. This picture is when it was about half done, I lost all the other pictures over the years.

Yeh Mythbusters is ok, they build some cool stuff there at times.
I like to watch Scrapheap Challenge whenever it's on, and also check out American Chopper, Monster Garage and American Hotrod from time to time.
I used to read car magazines 20-25 years ago and drool over Boyd Coddington's Hotrods.
He definitely knows how to design a nice car, but judging by that Hotrod show he turned in to a bit of an old grumpy bugger running a big empire and not doing any of the work himself in the end.
Guess that's what happens when your hobby becomes your livelyhood?
Only thing that annoys me with those shows, especially Hotrod and Chopper, is all the reality drama crap and everyone arguing with eachother.
To begin with I won't be putting a motor on this - pedal power only - but who knows, maybe down the track.
Lots of work to be done before that though.

RE: Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
Cut up the remains of the old Razor chopper this morning to see what useful bits I could get out of it.....
The bottom rails could maybe be used for a sissybar....
Also had a go at doing a bit of fishmouthing

Got the seat post on.
Moved it outside the clean up in the shed a bit and took a couple of pics.
Gotta start thinking about handlebars soon.

I believe in ya DVP. Really nice job so far and I'm pretty sure you've already thought this idea all the way through. Can't wait to see the next set of pics.
Don't know if you're aware but Boyd Coddington passed away a couple years ago..[&o]

RE: Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
Pedals aren't a problem. Just have a requirement that the rider must have really long legs.
If anything I'm gonna be a bit scrunched up when riding it.
But choppers aren't meant to be comfortable and easy to ride are they.....?
I mean no offense DVP

*ahem*
No not really to be honest, just making it up as I go along.
Never built a bike frame before and there are a lot of things I'd do differently if/when I make another one.
It's all a learning process but it keeps it interesting.

Man, this looks like it's coming along pretty nicely. When you get the pedals issue figured out you need to give that thing some paint!

Yep will do
Gonna go for the classic Hot Rod look.
Matt black with red rims and white wall tires.

RE: Scratchbuilt chopper bicycle
Thanks
I fiddled around a bit with the wheelmount this afternoon.
Took a bit more off it and changed the shape.
Made it more streamlined.
Now I've just gotta copy it for the other side...
