PS3 fix
This might help someone.
Certain discs wouldn't play on my PS3.
They wouldn't even show up on the main menu page.
This was happening both with games and DVDs.
So I consulted Dr. Google and found this:
It worked for me.
All my saved game data etc was still there but I had to go through and redo the settings for video/audio output, set wallpaper etc again.
It's essentially the same as starting your computer in Safe Mode.

So I consulted Dr. Google and found this:
1. Start with having the system in standby (red light is on)
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding.
It will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep.
When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button.
(if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)
4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
You will now have a screen with these options:
1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
3. Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
Select option 3.

Along the same lines:
When I had the PS2 it kept freezing and coming up with DISC READ ERROR on the screen.
Again - went online to have a look and read some horror stories about people having the same issue and sending their console off to Sony for repairs.
Of course they were out of warranty so they got charged hundreds of $$$ for Sony to "realign the laser" or some BS.
So
After a bit of searching I found a site that explained what was REALLY going on.
All it needed was some grease on the rails the laser setup slides on.
As my console was also well out of warranty I pulled it apart, bought a small tube of molybdenum grease and after 15 minutes it was working fine again and never missed a beat for the next couple of years I had it.
Clearly they put some cheap grease on there, which will last 3 months past warranty....
This fix may well apply to CD/DVD/BLU RAY players as well, so keep it in mind of you have a disc playing device that starts playing up or making funny noises.

My slim blu-ray drive failed 13 months after getting the system so it was out of warranty and almost the same price to buy a new one. It's funny they rag on Xbox's being unreliable but mine was fine.
