They basically turn the battery dc to ac and then run it through a transformer. I dont know circuit diagrams but if you go to a photoshop and ask for a disposable camera they will give you a free one. If you replace the cap with wires they will give you about the same amount of shock.

Home made is dead easy, take apart one of those electric cigarette lighters, take the 'strike' out, it's normally a thin plastic box with a wire on the end. superglue it into a pen with a metal 'button' and bob's your mother's brother. They are quite tough to strike, but that only makes people try harder!! When it does go off, it has quite a kick. Also no battery required, should last virtually forever. I haven't tried, I just cooked that up in my head while I was thinking about it, but I'm sure it will work.

Those "strikes" will only give you a short shock, these pens will keep shocking you until you let go of the button.

my cousin had a shock lighter that looked like a zippo it had a 9 volt battery in it, the would give you a nice little jolt lol, i had a watch with a metal band on it and i put the buttom of the ligther on the metal band and i felt the shock up up my left arm and down my right. it was so fun we took turns wearing my watch and shocking ourselves. lol
