Disappearing car door
I'm sure this has been around here before, but I haven't seen it. Really innovative design!

RE: Disappearing car door
I seen that about a year or two ago.
Its a cool idea but it would bad if it was raining then the whole inside of the door would get wet and you would have to wait for it to close. To me its a waste of money.

RE: Disappearing car door
that's very cool
and inovative
but i don't care for it
as jb pointed out
the whole inside would get wet
if raining or snowing
and what happens if there's a
power failure?
another thing is, to me
a safety concern
there's no visible opening door
to warn on coming drivers
of an exiting passenger
i think that a
gull wing would give you
a wow factor w/o
the possible disadvantages

I'd rather suicide doors (I think that's the name, the doors that open up instead of out)

RE: Disappearing car door
imitation
is
the sincerest form of flattery
ok, i did a search
suicide doors are hinged
on the rear edge
and open opposite of
normal doors
gull wing doors are hinged
at the roof and open out and up
lambo doors - also called
vertical doors open from the top hinge
kind of up and away
anyway, those are the ones
i like, was thinking of

RE: Disappearing car door
They are called 'knife-edge' doors. Probably the most space efficient doors without compromising structural integrity.
I just thought the engineering involved with the disappearing door is pretty phenomenal.

to be able to retro fit
something like that to
a stock vehicle
w/o compromising
cabin space or ground clearance
really took a lot of
imagination and skill

The lambo doors are what I was thinking of.

RE: Disappearing car door
I think the first knife-edge doors may have been on the '74 Countach. Those were certainly the first I saw. There was a late-model Caprice here at a car show last year that had the same doors, and he said it was hell making them work correctly. The Lambo's doors were designed from the beginning to be as light as possible, but the big sedan's doors are very heavy.

the ones that open up vertically from the side like on a DeLorean DMC12 or an old Benz SL are called "gullwing" doors

RE: Disappearing car door
One of the older BMW's had it.
It was the BMW Z1, they were made for an extremely breif period. Fantastic cars to drive.
This new " Dissappearing Door " is a direct copy of that.
In all honestey, I prefer the old one more .

RE: Disappearing car door
The disapearing car door is not for the average car but somebody who doesn't ever get out in the rain, or ever worry about it failing because they would just fly their jet lol
But a very cool idea, tons of skill to get to work.

RE: Disappearing car door
We're discussion grammar and style in the other thread
I think the most interesting doors I've seen were in the '80s during the mini-truck craze. Some doors were hinging on the a-pillar, so they went up and swung outward and forward like wings. Really cool!

RE: Disappearing car door
well, i know its not bad, but if you have doors that cost a lot, you might as well stick em on something ridiculous like a lamborghini or something, which you want to impress someone with.
