Warning: New 'puter virus, Conflicker
Well, it really is not that new, but it has seen probably 4 generations of modifications to make it deadlier to your 'puter.
Rumor has it that this bug is supposed to do something super-fly to all the infected machines soon, so if you have not already done so, update your OS, your anti-virus programs, you firewalls, etc. and give your 'puter a good scanning.
I do not know to what extent this bug has already affected the WWW, but if it is like the sasser worms and the About:Blank bugs, then this is not a virus to simply sneeze at.
Here is a link to US-C.E.R.T. with more info on this bug and hopefully possible safeguards to protect against this bug
http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/releases/pr_1238443907751.shtm
I might be overreacting, but I say, if you can, take action now to protect your machines.

RE: Warning: New 'puter virus, Conflicker
A worm is something that typically infects your computer through some hidden "entrance" in programming, usually accidentally left there by programmers (these are what those software patches are usually for). After that it' pretty much a virus after that. Replicating itself and sending it to others while possibly doing damage to your computer.

Yep. And from what I understand, this worm is aimed at MS Windows OSs. I do not know who effective it is at penetrating Vistas, but from what I heard, it probably has already hit some older Windows OSs (like XP, and other earlier Windows).
Worse, I was like reading some news somewhere and they said once the worm goes viral and has infected enough 'puters, it networks on the net and forms a net-bot where all the affected 'puters function together as one giant supercomputer to execute the will of the viral-bot. Sucks really, how your own personal 'puter is being used to perpetuate a damn massive virus.
I'd about like to kick these virus writers in the pants and then spit on them as they lay doubled over on the ground. That is how little respect I have for such punks.

I totally agree. I don't want my $3000 investment in a good computer being ruined by some worthless fat *** who sits behind a screen all day and writes software to harm others to make up for his inadequacies. People like that should be put to life in prison, be water-boarded to get the information from them (I don't care what you people think, I know it's considered torture and those punks deserve it), and the government should reopen Alcatraz and the punks should be sent there with minimal food and no access to any electronics.
Sorry if that's harsh and inhumane, but I really don't care. These people may or may not realize that they could accidentally take down a major network of another country or our own, but if it did something like that, it could be disastrous.

Now, vid that, and you can start a new virus, a really hilarious vid that will go viral in its own right!

Well I had used it before and liked it! But I thought that all I could get were the crappy freeware programs but now since I can run Windows based programs on it I may go back. I can't really think straight. Too much Benadryl.

Maybe you are allergic to Conflicker. I prescribe to you 60GB of Norton malware defender for 5 days, be sure to finish your prescription lest the bug mutates and becomes immune to the Norton

RE: Warning: New 'puter virus, Conflicker
pretty funny thread...
you can run pretty much anything (in a linux environment) under Wine or some other emulator...
And how a virus will destroy 3grand worth of hardware... (well, viruses to target the bios are starting to be developed...)
and how programmers are now fat pigs. I bet you that the people that write these viruses make a lot more than you do...
and how all of a sudden the government computers are going to blow up... dude this isn't even a threat. Government employs white hats for this sort of thing...
