Upgrading to Windows 7?
I got this upgrade pack from Vista -> Windows 7, and I was just wondering if anyone knew if I would need to like, store my songs/pics/etc onto an external HD before doing so? Or does it keep everything on my comp and it'll be good afterwords? Got a TON (60gb+) of music on my computer, as well as other stuff i'd need.
tldr; will upgrading to Windows 7 keep or delete my music and other files with the upgrade pack?

Its been awhile, but during the install it will tell you it will make a backup of stuff you had in my docs, tho its always best to make a backup.
Let someone who has recently upgraded tell you tho, ive been on win7 for a while now.

Alright, thanks man.
Anyone else? Would like a second opinion/more facts before I jump ship.
Tried the beta out earlier this year and thought it was pretty cool.

RE: Upgrading to Windows 7?
Personally, I back up all my music and photos to an external hard drive. You never know when disaster can strike and I've got a lot of stuff I don't want to lose.
I just got a new laptop w/ Windows 7 and it has a file transfer thing where it tells you to label your old OS as the "old computer" and W 7 as the "new computer" and then it moves stuff. And yes, pics and music are moved as well as favorites and lots of other stuff.
I've also heard that the W7 upgrade from Vista is not a "full" version of W7, IE not the same as starting from scratch with a blank HD and W7. IDK, that's just what I've heard.

ABU:
It is not necessary to backup your personal files when you do an upgrade installation (from vista to 7) but i highly recommend having a backup of your personal files. If you do an Upgrade installation (stress on the Upgrade part, not a CLEAN install) your files will be preserved.
However, if you are going to switch from 32bit to 64bit you cannot do an upgrade installation. You can only do a clean install. I would recommend using 64bit windows if you ever need more than 4 gigs of ram. If you plan on sticking with 4 gigs of ram then you should go to 32 bit for the easy of an upgrade installation.

Honestly I think it's more of a new GUI than anything...it's still windows XP underneath the covers.

That said, I just rebuilt my PC at home with XP this summer, so I'm not bothering to do an OS reinstall (I don't do upgrades) for a while. No 7 for me, for a while.

Back up everything you want to keep. And maybe some of the stuff you don't want to keep. And maybe wait about a month or two to see how 7 shakes out. There were a lot of early Vista users who wished they had waited. Every new release has a few (or more) bugs to be worked out. Has been since I upgraded from MS-DOS. I'm sure some of you remember that.

Heck yeah I remember DOS. Well, I remember having to use it, I don't think I remember enough to do it today.
Remember when 256meg was a HUGE hard drive?
So far, 2 weeks in, Window 7 is working well for me - not a single problem as yet.
