Champex
I don't know what it's marketed under in the States or Europe, but here it's called Champex.
It's the new stop smoking pill. It doesn't replace nicotine like a patch or gum, it's actually an inhibitor. Fools the part of the brain that desires a cigarette / nicotine into thinking it's already had enough or doesn't need it.
I've been smoking since I was 16 and it's well past the time for me to quit. I've tried all kinds of other ways, but I always relapse.
Does anyone have any knowledge or first hand experience with this pill? Side effects, success rates, etc?
Thanks

RE: Champex
I've heard about the weird dreams. Also, headaches, gas, nausea, depression, possible suicidal tendancies (not very common though) and in a very few cases....euphoria.
But I'd like some first hand experience if possible.
Thanks

from the side-effects associated with the pill, it sounds to me your almost better off cold turkey. its simply not good for you and often has people have suicidal thoughts and become more violent. (sounds like withdrawal right?)
i have never smoked, so i cant imagine how bad the addiction is. my father quit cold and he was a nervous wreck for a few months, but as long as he had a sucker, it would take the edge off. its been about 9years now.
i dont trust a drug that has a whole 1.5 minutes of side-effects and plays with your mind's chemicals.

but seriously man, whenever you hurt yourself so bad they give you pain killers im willing to bet your going to be taking them. And yes, they are a chemical altering pill. thats how they work.

That's how they ALL work. That's how anything does anything.

ALL drugs have side-effects. All drugs change the body's chemistry slightly to gain a desired effect.
That's what drugs DO. If you don't like the fact that one drug does it, don't take any. Throw away your Tylenol, bro, you might get indigestion[X(]

they tried putting me on ADD meds as a little kid, both me and my ma refused treatment- now they are finding out that that particular drug can develop cancer and other medical issues- such as an enlarged liver.
- which brings me to my point. if you are able to do something without the use of drugs, try your absolute best to do it cold turkey. if for some reason it is impossible, then resort a drug that has the least amount of side-effects.

RE: Champex
I never said anything about mind altering. i said chemical altering. And like TBJ said, thats how all drugs work. whether it be tylonal or ADD medicine or strait up morphine.
Do you smoke? have you ever tried quitting? anything that can help the process is needed. The side effects usually are not that bad, and considering that this chantix stuff has been proven to help people quit smoking i think its a great idea. Besides, i would rather be a little depressed or something like that from the side effect then die of lung cancer from smoking cigs my entire life.

RE: Champex
At any rate.
These side effects are not that severe.
The side effects of quitting cold turkey are severe.
You do not want to be around ThunderbirdJunkie on one of his quitting streaks. He is a dick.

RE: Champex
It's weird how that works gelb....[&:]
Gives me an idea for another thread.
I'm doing some research about champex. I read somewhere that this was originally a drug given to mental patients, and the smoking part was in fact a side effect discovered through the use of the drug. But I know the big drug companies have previously "forgotten" to mention certain issues about medicines / drugs. Hence this thread and the request for real life knowledge.
When I had a chat with the pharmacists about it he was very vague about side effects, etc. This stuff is available over the counter here. And if I remember correctly, last time I was in the States, you needed a perscription for it. Yes I will meet with my doctor first and discuss options. Like I said before, I've been smoking since I was 16...I'm now 43. I've tried quitting numerous times before....I'm pretty sure most smokers have. And just like TBJ mentioned.....I'm not a nice person to be around when trying to do it cold turkey.
The makers of champex state that there are no 'long-term' side effects and any side-effects experienced while taking the drug are 'mostly' minor. It's only supposed to be a 3 or 4 month long course....less if you feel up to it. I personally don't like taking drugs....of any kind, period...but I need to quit smoking. I want to be around to see my kids graduate, play with their kids, etc.
oh and guys.....I didn't start this thread to get filled with smart ***** remarks. If you feel the need to do that, make your own thread or be a man and PM the person you're having a prob with.
Thanks again.

RE: Champex
Yeah, it's still a prescription thing here.
Doctor keeps pushing ThunderbirdJunkie on it...which is why he hasn't bitten the bullet. Makes ThunderbirdJunkie curious as to what ulterior motives there are, since his entire family is in the medical field and he knows how drug company sales representatives work.

RE: Champex
Hmmmm....the motive could possibly be money...[&:]
Of course I've thought of a way around this though...
I work in radio....Champex advertises on our stations....I talk to the sales rep proposing an idea that I get a free 4 month course. In return, I do quick daily updates on my progress in the 'lifestyle' talk show. No holds barred, totally open and honest interviews / reviews. Listeners get to follow my progress....show / station hopefully gets good ratings....client happy for all the exposure....me hopefully gets to quit smoking.....and not have to pay for it....[8D]
