RE: cd drive not functioning properly

If it's a CD drive, that's why. Those games are on DVDs. Changing your RAM or graphics card shouldn't have any effect on your optical drives. If your RAM is the wrong speed or configured incorrectly in your computers BIOS, that can cause files being copied from the DVDs (like when installing) to give CRC errors, or create corrupt files on your hard disk as they are copied over. What 'exactly' is happening?

All optical drives (i.e. CD, DVD, rewritable, etc....) are labeled on the front of the tray. Look at your drive and it will tell you if it's CD or DVD. If it does indeed say DVD then your drive has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If it doesn't say DVD then it's not capable of reading DVD's.

The tray should be labeled like Ken stated. If still in doubt, put a DVD movie in it and see if it will play.

For example, my tray is labled: DVD+/-R/W / CD-R/W. This means it is good for both CD & DVD and will read, write and re-write on these mediums with the correct discs and software.

yup its DVD compatible.

In that case I would say that your drive is bad if it won't read DVD's. You'll need to replace it. But it's not a big deal as DVD (even DVD recording) drives are pretty cheap. Takes about 10 minutes (or less) to change one out.

Go to the manufacturers web site (player mfg, not computer) and look for driver updates. Then download the appropriate one. Even if your current driver is the same it may have been corrupted so download it regardless.

man this isnt as easy as i thought it would be to fix , there doesent seem to be any sepport for my model[:o] , can i do something like uninstal the driver and reinstal it?

RE: cd drive not functioning properly

I wouldn't bother reinstalling the driver. Basic optical drivers are provided in windows, I've never HAD to install a driver for an optical device in a 15 year career in IT. If it worked one day and doesn't work the next, just replace it, a DVD writer is what, $30?? Is that really worth your time messing about and downtime of your games/music? If you replace it and it still has a problem, then we can start looking at Windows or drivers for solutions, and even if that is the case, it's still advantageous once you do get it all working again, to have two DVD drives.

RE: cd drive not functioning properly

As Foxy has pointed out, the "drivers" to run the DVD drive are a core part of Windows. If they weren't working properly your hard drive would more than likely not work as well. Trust me here, I do this for a living. My wife and I own and operate a computer shop so I see things like this all the time. Optical drives like CD's and DVD's can go out in a heartbeat like this. They will work one day and not the next. It's a very simple procedure to replace the drive and be back up and running in no time.

IDE drives like a DVD are very simple to replace. Pull the old one out and put the new one back in. Hook up the power and IDE cable and you're done. The only thing you will need to check is that the jumpers on the back of the new drive are set to match the old drive.
