The British Museum and the Smithsonian both wanted the Wright Flyer. Back then, the British Museum was THE most prestigious museum in the world and the Smithsonian was much less impressive. But the WB's gave it to the Smithsonian because the Smithsonian agreed to bestow the undesputed title of "First Fliers" to Orville and Wilbur ending the controversy once and for all.
So the Wright Bros were probably not ACTUALLY the first to succeed in powered flight, but they are considered to be the first thanks largely to the Smithsonian.
