Default Katana 40 arf "nose falling off"

Hi Guys

I got my katana 40 out today and flew it a couple of time's, the plane started acting up after a couple of fast rolls, I brought it in and found that the nose of the fuse was broke right where the ply ends and the balsa sheeting begins. both top and bottom, I took it home and pulled the covering off and the nose fell off in my hand. The basa sticks behind the ply is very soft. Has anyone else had this problem and any ideas about how to repair it would be welcome.

Thanks
Dale

You say katana 40. Is this the Accel Kat 40?

Mike

Would it work to make me a fuse out of foam like the giant yak you sold me? Say 1/2 inch foam? Cut channels where needed and sheet with balsa and new ply nose pieces Thanks

I think that idea would work great, post pics when you do it.

Done got started

I will post pic's tommorow. So far I have the fuse cut out, the motor mounts had to be enlarged by 3/8" I did them and have the sheeting drying. Next I will sand the foam to shape, and scuff the fuse to allow the glue to penetrate. If anyone has any Ideas, chime in.

Thanks
Dale

You might want to download one of Mikes manuals, that and make sure to use allot of weight when sheeting the fuse.

Thanks Planeplanter

I already have a manual from building the 79" Yak, What do you think about using hardwood mounting blocks and wire gear instead of the heavy fiberglass landing gear?

Thanks
Dale

I've personaly never liked wire gear, just me. I would still use the hardwood mounts and Tetherite

I believe there was a thread on the probro site on fixing or building new fuses for the Accel kat 40s with problems. Anyway, Planeplanter has given the perfect solution I would recommend. Build a new fuse same style as the OMP Edge and Yak techniques.

Plane planter

I posted pictures above. I still haven't decided what to do with the landing gear, thats one of the last things to do before sheeting one side. I still have to counter sink servo rails on the tail etc. I see the katana v2 kits come with wire gear hows every one liking them?

Thanks
Dale

Mike

I have a good start already on the fuse. I found when I disected the plane that the failure was caused by me over tightening the landing gear. It cracked the botom plate there and caused the whole mess.

I'm a dummy

Thanks

I decided to take your advice and use the existing landing gear. Posted a couple more pics. Think I need a new way to hold down the sheeting?

Thanks

Yeah definatley heavy, I gota quit that stuff, but have you ever tasted West Valley water? Bad, bad , really bad!

I'm going to sheet it with 1/16 th balsa and then cap the nose with 1/16 th 3ply. Should be plenty strong. I'll let you know how it works after stressin it a bit.

Good luck on yours

Plane planter

I've had a chance to do more on the kat. Included a new pic. How are you coming on yours? A couple more days and I'll be able to test fly this one. I sure hope the foam fuse works. Seems sturdy, but hard to keep straight. I really needed to use more weight.

Good luck on yours
Dale

WOW! Looks great! I haven't had a chance to start mine yet.
IF you get a bow in the fuse you can sometimes spray it down and re-press it. I usualy try to use 300 to 400 lbs.
Looks like you'll be flyin again this weekend.[8D]

Finally finished it up. It came in at 4.5 lbs, a little less than the original. I'll try to test it tomorow and see if it still flys.

See ya

Hey Plane planter

I finally got the katana out and flew it today, It still flys great but I think I got a little to much right thrust in it. It pulls to the right on up lines not much but enouth to play with it. Other than that it flys just as good as before and lands a little better. It appears to be very solid with plenty of strength for the ys 63, I believe the foam fuse is the way to go.

Thanks for you help
Dale
