First off i want to say.. im so sorry about what happend to your home town and possibly your home. the slow stick is a great beginner plane but it breaks fairly easily and wont take much wind at all. but the Mulitplex Easy Star would be a great plane! it comes in a RTF versoin with everything you need (except AA batteries, of course). its a pusher prop design meaning no more broken props and bent shafts. its made of Elapor foam so you can put it together with normal CA glue. big wingspan makes it easy to fly. its about $180 RTF. heres a link to towerhobbies: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFXV0&P=7

good luck and have fun!

Slow Sticks are not very nice in 10mph winds with a stock motor. 5mph, OK, not 10. If you need to ROG, & fly in 10mph winds, get a tiger moth. But to answer your question, a HiTech focus 3 Tx is a solid 3ch radio. They have mixing so if you want to fly a wing or 'V' tail later on, you're set. Slow Sticks & Slo Vs are good fun planes. Good luck.

I thought tiger moths couldn't fly in no wind whatsoever? I am going to have to look at this one too.

well i had a thawk and it flies great lots of control as well its also really quick for what it is .. but if you build the slowstick heavy i mean use red ducttape instead of clear tape ....run 1000 mah nimhs.....clip the wings and go up to a 11x7 apc prop and it will handle 10 mph winds

I second the SS experience kuzikood is reporting.

Building the SS a little heavy and clipping its wings at the last rib will make this plane fly very steady in 10+ mph winds. You just have to reinforce the fiberglass spar joiners, otherwise you risk the wings folding during a tight loop.

Also, a Futaba or Hitec 3CH radio is very convenient price wise, but sooner or later you will want a TX capable of more channels. Unless you can find any of these 3CH radios for less than 50 bucks, get a 4CH Hitec system (depending on the servo type, anywhere between 110 and 140 bucks).

How about this for a radio?
Click

I fly a slow stick with a stock set up. I have flown it in some decent wind before and it takes a lot of stivk control to do it. That thing gets bumped around a lot. When I was flying into the wind, it looked almost like it was standing still. Like flying a kite.

I went to hobbyzone.com and purchased a super decathalon without radio, charger or battery (ordered replacement parts) for under $80 shipped. That also may be an option for you.

Hey Stocker,

This is the Radio Equipment I use on my 3 planes and one of them is a Slow Stick.
I would suggest a single convertion receiver only if you plan to fly at a local park or a remote area.
Use Dual Converson if you will be flying at an RC Club.

Radio Equipment Total cost for a great starter radio system is $105.00
Laser 4 Transmitter and Charger - cost = $64.99
http://www.hobbyhorse.com/hitec_trans.shtm

HiTec HFS-04MG Micro 4 Channel FM Receiver - Cost = $31.99
http://www.hobbyhorse.com/hitec_receivers_single.shtml

Receiver Add on - HiTec 72Mhz Receiver Crystal - Cost = $7.99 (get "Single Conversion" and select the same channel as the Transmitter you order)
http://www.hobbyhorse.com/crystals.shtml

Plane - Total cost into plane about $65.00
Slow Stick kit w/motor should run you about $32.00 to $36.00

Add
1 ESC @ about $11.00
2 servos @ about $10.00 to 15.00 each (try to get small ones)

Then you just need to pick the batteries and charger you want to use.

Check out my Hangar under My Profile

This is a GREAT starter plane and you will enjoy it in any average wind conditions. Learn and practice on calm no wind days, and then on windy days stay high and away from the ground and enjoy the winds!

Best of Luck!

Hey Carl,

What lipo charger is that? It plugs into your car ac port? How long does it take to charge those lipos? I want a field charger, but I want a fast one also.

Skid,

The charger itself is not a Lipo charger. I added a Kokam "Safety Guard" and that is what allows me to charge a Lipo with a standard Nicad, NiMh charger. (more on the equip in just a bit)

Those are 7.2v 1350 mAh 10c Lipos and the charge rate is 1c. At 1.3 amps the recharge is an about an hour each.
I get 25 to 45 minutes of flight time on each and go to the field with 3 charged and ready to go. Works good and I'm very happy with it

No matter what your experience level is with Lipos, I believe using the Kokam Lipo Safety Guard is a MUST ! ! !
Available at these two links

https://www.fmadirect.com/site/fma.htm?body=Store
goto - LiPo Chargers and Accessories - then - NEW! KOKAM LI-PO SAFETY GUARD Part Number: LIPOSG-2S

or

http://www.balsapr.com/catalog/battNCharge/safety.asp
Kokam Lipo 2 Cell (7.4V) Safety Guard - CLOSEOUT $10.00 each

Now my charge has gotten some bad press reviews. Not because it is a bad charger, but because it has been advertised as having the ability to charge Lipos. If you use this charger by itself to charge Lipos YOU WILL BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE OR CAR!
I will edit this post over the next day or two and give you a few links that will provide you a lot of the details and concerns others have expressed about Lipos and this charger.
