Default Speed Controller Hook Up

I am new to building electrics and I have a question. I bought a GWS 400 ESC for my P-51 and the wires on it are 16ga. The wires comming from the 300C motor are 22ga with what I believe is a JST connector and the same comming from the battery. Is it ok to hook 22ga and 16ga wires together? Should I solder them direct or put connectors on them? The ESC is 15amp by the way. Thanks for any help.

What I would do is cut away as much as the 16 gauge wire as you can and solder the jst leads on and finish it off with some heatshrink.

Make sure your leads are still long enough though. The 16 gauge is overkill and weighs alot more.
