RE: Which plane for beginner?

Thanks for the tip on antics online - will bookmark. I got the spares from Wonderland Models, cant recommend them highly enough, superb service (the guy even phoned me 3mins after I emailed him and had a chat about parts availability!)

I'm ok with an iron (clothes or solder!) but admit my electronics knowledge is a bit lacking - I'm always keen to learn new skills though!

I can see the point of the Slo-V's - even flying my little 2ch silverlit only head height from the ground is a blast!

Quick thought: does anyone know if the PZ Spitfire (3Ch?) transmitter can be used with another plane -- if so, can I get away with buying just a plane with all the electrics installed? Seems a waste to buy another controller at this stage.

Thanks

Which spitfire TX do you have - iirc it was the one stick version?

RE: Which plane for beginner?

The Spitfire TX will operate nearly all of the range (except F27C!!), but, and this is the main but, it has to be the same channel (there are 5 I think). The channel frequency's are in the handbook or a little sticker on the TX itself. If you have probs with the esc, Rx etc you have to replace the whole circuit boardy thingy (about £34!!!). If you had probs with a built up plane cost would be £15 esc, £10 RX, 480 brushed motor £5 (but I would look at b/less), servos £6 minimum each but get the bet you can afford (metal gears if you can get them, trust me!!). Buying on-line in Britain delivery is about £8 or free if over £100-£150. See the RCU search box for info/threads about planes and even videos. A thought, our Aus cousins (we know where you live Ozrcboy!!!) fit webcams to a lot of their planes - their preference _ Multiplex Easystar. If it can fly well AND carry a camera it must be good (pricey here though!). :D:)[X(][X(]

i love the slo v and you can get it for 50 pounds from antcis online, being a cheapskate finally paid off. if yo want it to fly in a strong breeze however 10 quid on the upgrade 7cell 600mah battery would not go a miss.
many people confuse that battery with the parkzone 7cell 900mah though so do avoid that.

Thanks all - I've decided to keep things uncomplicated and buy a package.

Still considering the Multiplex Easystar (hear some stories of people getting long flights out of a single charge) and the Super Cub (love the scale looks but concerned about robustness). Quite like the Slo-V and especially the price tag but I'm a tad concerned that it wont be capable of coping with the breezes we seem to persistently be having here.

Hi,

<snip>
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I had my most trouble with my landings. I always seem to come in too fast and have had to do a few go arounds. Nothing has broken yet but I have had 1 or 2 landings where I thought something should have been broken but wasn't.

Thanks for taking the time to write that up - that's very interesting. It looks like the sim time paid big dividends for you.

With respect to your landings you might find it useful to do a full scale approach - fly the downwind, base and final just letting your altitude and speed come off a bit on each leg. As you make that final turn just be a little aware that while the spitfire glides beautifully with the wings level, without enough corner speed she will have a nasty stall.

Once you've closed the throttle on the final make sure you dive slightly below the glide angle, letting you just build up a little airspeed as you approach the ground (not much! Just a little). This airspeed will make it easier to do a nice flare 6-12 inches from the ground and just hold the model level and let her sink into the ground once the airspeed is gone.

Oh, and if it doesn't look like you are going to land 10 metres short of yourself, then chances are you are going to land long.

Cheers,
Oz.
Thanks for the advice! I didn't make it out this weekend. I will try this week.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I've ordered a HZ Super Cub (everyone seemed to rate it as a good trainer plus parts seem to be in good supply!) - its awaiting collection as I type!

Here's to hoping the weather stays as it is (currently 22 degrees and sunny)!

I'll keep you posted.

RE: Which plane for beginner?

I didn't know where else to post this:

I finally got a chance to fly my Spitfire again today and it was great! I actually flew with the high rates and did several barrel rolls. The plane rolled nicely but lost a little alititude but that was my fault.

I do have a question, during my last flight I heard a weird noise coming from the plane. So I landed it and noticed that there was black plastic "dust" all over the inside. I think my gearbox is toast. Could it be that I left the plane on full throttle while doing the rolls? Could it have been damage from a previous hard landing?

Anyways, it was a perfect day to fly.

Terry

I saw something on either RCuniverse or rcgroups (can't recall which sorry) about lots of people having problems with the gearboxes on PZ warbirds ATM. Your gearbox shouldn't disintegrate just cause you are running WOT. Take it back to where you bought it from - they owe you a new gearbox IMHO.

On that note, does anyone have any recommendations for a beginner>intermediate (pre-parkzone) plane (or should I pursue flying the Spitfire??)? So far I have short listed a few models including the Hobbyzone SuperCub and a few cheaper 3ch EPF, powered gliders (figured with a glider I'd get a bit more airtime but could still use the power to speed things up a bit). An example of which is [link=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brand-New-3ch-Radio-Controlled-RC-Glider-Aeroplane-UK_W0QQitemZ330118046881QQihZ014QQcategoryZ19164QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem]Glider[/link]

I got one of those off eBay. It's not wonderfully built, but after a bit of pre-flight prepping, it flew. Only one flight so far. The centre of gravity wasn't quite right (I'm working on that) so it didn't glide much, but it was easy enough to fly. It has an incredibly flexible wing -- too flexible, you'd say generally. BUT it bends a long way without breaking... it's scary when you see it flex every time you use the elevator. Then you try a bigger elevator movement, the wing flexes like it wants to wrap right around backwards, the nose lifts rapidly, the load releases and the wing snaps back into shape, ... and you've just done a loop in about 2m of air!

I don't know whether to stiffen the wing to make it more "normal", or just enjoy its strangeness.

Anyway, I want to fiddle with the CG, and get longer running battery, THEN I'll decide whether to modify the wing.

I wouldn't say it's good for a first plane, though it's not bad. It's just odd, and fun.

Go with the Super Cub. Inexpensive, teaches you the basics and then some, and is always good to have as a nice/relaxing time.

Great choice sidebp.;)

Pop into the Super Cub Club, when you have time.
