Default OS50SX versus OS46FX

For those who have had both a 46FX and the new OS50, could you comment on why or why not the OS50 is worth the extra dough.

I'm trying to choose between these engines, but on paper the OS50 is not that impressive. I mean, I can't justify the extra cost of the 50SX.

Opinions with experience needed.

Thanks.

Seafury,

I have many hours on both engines.

I need more info on your application of the engine.

1) What type of plane?

2) Do you need unlimited vertical?

3) What is the planed weight of the plane.

The 50sx is a much more powerful engine. It can be over kill for a .40 size profile, however I would recommend the 50sx for a profile in the 5+ lb category. (i.e. knife arf, funtana.)

I have had (sort of still have) both. The .50 is the same size and turns more prop.

With the stock muffler neither one makes much power. At the very least remove the baffle.

Default OS50SX versus OS46FX

Jess,

Its going to start off in a quickee. I realize the engine is not really meant for this application, but its not staying their for long.

I plan to use it on either a profile the the CG330 or something like a small pattern (venus 40). In both cases, unlimited would be nices.

If the OS50 is considerably more powerful then its worth the extra dollars.

Thanks!

Airplane weights would be between 4.5 and 5.5 lbs.

I had a 46fx on a tiger II a couple years back, and I was really dissappointed with the vertical performance. My tiger II was a bit porky at 5.75 - 6lbs.

Seafury,

I would use the 50sx. The CG 330 comes in over 5 lbs and the venus even more. A 46fx would leave you disappointed.

The 50 is worth the extra dollars if the power is needed. And it sounds like you will need a little more power without the extra weight.

Here is a friend of mine TRing a Great Planes .40 size Cap 232 with an OS 50sx. The Cap weighs 5 lb 6 oz. Truly unlimited vertical. A 46 just would not cut it for this application. A 60 or a 90 does not work because of the extra weight. The wing would be way overloaded. It would hover but the other 3d would suffer greatly.

Hope this helps,

Jess

Why not try the Webra 50 or the Irvine 53. Both have more power. Cheaper than the OS 50.

Or you could make it scream with the os61fx. It weighs more but power will not be an issue. I have one on mine.

I had a 46FX with UT muffler on the CG 330 and it was plenty. Not without the UT though. The 50SX should be enough. It does have that extra power. Before I would buy a OS 50SX however, I would buy a Irvine 53. Less $$ and even a little more power then the OS 50SX.
Nuff said, just my $0.02

For those of you who are wondering why I'm choosing between only the OS46 and OS50, its because I'm looking for ultra reliability and the user friendliness of an OS.

I don't know anyone in my area that has a Irvine. When looking at the specs, the Irvine53 and OS50 appear very similar.

61FX wouldn't for my application.

Default difference

the 46 will peel in time and the 50 won't
never had the os 50 but had a few 46's. sold them only because I was tired of changing the liners.... even though os honers the part.
bought a Webra50 to replace the 46, very happy with it.

Bugsiegel,
i have about 10 gal of fuel on my 1st one...always run 15% cool power. its on a mcpipe....use a 11.5x4 or 12.25x3.73 usally run it a little on rich side. runs perfect. how close to a liner peel do you think i am?does it destroy the piston or do you just replace the liner? i have heard of others having the same problem but only due to running it hot, hot.

If it's between an OS 46 and an OS 50, snag a 50SX. It's a no brainer: the 50 has more kick and the power is noticeable. Throw a 12x4 on either engine and you'll instantly feel the difference.

While I love the 46s (I have two), the 50 has more umph.

Yours,
Juhan

PS: I've got a bunch of videos featuring both the 46 and 50 on Morris ARFs, Ultra Sticks, etc... I can feel the difference.

Well the question was, which one, OS .46 or OS.50. I do have both with LOTS of fuel through both. Probably 20 gallons in the .50, maybe 10 in the .46. They are great. But as someone else said, the plane is the question. The .50 should do you well, my Knife is 5lb 3oz and Rocks on the .50.

Don't discount the other suggestions though. The Irvines are great. My .25 Irvine is just as reliable as my .25fs, and easier to setup. I never have touched it since I set it up.

well, my Irvines are at least as reliable as my OS engines. No need to play with that remote needle (specially on the larger OS).
But if it has to be an OS, go with the 50SX. You won't be sorry. Don't go with the 61FX. To heavy.

Thanks all. I'm getting the OS50, based on your comments.

I would like to try the Webra's, Irvines etc in the future. At the moment, these engines are either expensive or difficult to find in Canada.
