Let the Sledge Fest begin!!
Question: Did you guys use the ply hatches? Did you cut lightening holes like the instructions show? I'm used to making my hatches out of balsa. Maybe I've built too many taco's and my mind is still stuck in .25 size land....
Just doing one for me and Jess right now... I have two other I'm going to try to build for some other buddies....
As far as covering schemes go... I think I'm gonna borrow one I saw on that Wild Hare Design contest.... I'm only covering mine...

On my profile hots, i needed to save weight so i used a balsa hatch. When i covered it though it was pretty weak and it just bent. So i put took those 1/4" strips of CF and just glued 2 on there, one at each end, going across the grain. So then it didn't bend when it was covered.

ChuckAuger, it's obvious that you have no idea how a plane gets finished.
First, you must repeatedly mention "that plane I'm going to build" for months, before actually doing anything. The next step is a quick frame up of one single component, followed by several months of sitting in the corner as you start new projects which also get set aside for other new projects. This stage is frequently interrupted by work, emergency repairs, and periods of "don'tfeellikebuildingitis". Eventually the plane gets built but still needs covering, radio install, etc. They must now sit undisturbed, allowing the requisite number of cobwebs and dust layers to accumulate. Finally, when the plane currently being flown has been abused beyond recognition and hope of repair, the "new" project gets finished in a Friday all-night work session involving numerous Jolt Colas and heavy metal cd's at 105 decibels. Insert your favorite energy drink/musical style/volume setting in place of my choices.
Now that you see the proper chain of events, I hope you can understand why I am eager to outsource as many of my projects as I can.

We don't need no...
stinking hatches.....
On my Knife I just used Monokote to cover up the servo area. Once set up, never had to get back in there....and if you do....just recover....
Of course I never did the art work that you guys do........
Gary - your method is very close to mine, except, somewhere in there you sell your project to buy the same plane already built....

Yep, Gary.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does things that way!
I guess I work better under pressure. The "emergency repairs" catagory sure kept me busy this summer. Finally got around to starting a back-up plane to the Sledge..now I'm skeered to even take the Sledge out for fear of dorking it before I get the OMP done.
I'm shooting for a multi-plane fleet by Nashville..now if I can just keep from shooting myself in the foot
Plus I really wanted to get the OMP done with identical gear as the Sledge for a true apples-to-apples comparison. The Sledge has gained an ounce or two, but it's all behind the CG
Swany..Pugs don't need hatches cause he just putters about the sky..no 3D for him
ANd my TopCap was built without hatches, and it's OK, but just to shift the battery to make a CG change requires an iron..and I'm out of that color MonoKote..

Paul...
Well unless the Sledge is different than a Knife...the servos are mounted to rails......so the hatch does nothing....
Now, if your servos are attached to rails and you still need hatches to keep them in, then buddy, you are a MUCH better, or wilder, 3D pilot than I......
Chuck......never mind......

No....
the leading edge of the wing is sheeted.....
I had well over 100 flights on it, the guy I bought it from had several, and the guy I sold it to flew it several as well....
Nothing ever flew out of the Monokote hatches......would would have been impossible.
