It's a heavy ARF, and you will need some power. I would go with a Irvine 53 or OS50sx. I had a OS 46FX in mine, but needed a UT muffler to get the extra power. If going 4 banger go with the Saito 72 or YS63. I prefer 2 strokes though (but that's just me).

Flew mine for one week with two differnet brands of 46 size 2 strokes. flew the plane ok but felt it was lacking.
Installed OS 70 surpassII and I am much happier
13 x4w apc @ 10500 ( will peak at 10900-11000)ground rpm on coolpower 15%
Saito 72 would work (Have a saito 100 and love it) well also and save a couple of oz. in the nose . With the OS i had to add two oz too the tail to get it to balance at 5-3/4 C/G .
I was just pinching pennys and was able to have the os delivered to my home for about 30 bucks less than the saito.
take care

Saito .72 with an APC 13x6 Sport prop...
Flies fast when you want it, hovers with ease, lots of pull-out power...
Rocking combo...
You can see video of it in the review I did of it here on RCU...

I use an Irvine 53 with an APC 12.25x3.75. It's OK and hovers OK, but could use a little more.
Tower 75 would be awesome. As somebody already stated, the plane is a little heavy, so I wouldn't hold back on power...

If money is tight try a .46 Thunder Tiger and a tower muffler ($13), use the 12x4 APC.
I have that setup on my Extreme (just under 5 lbs) and it is enough for 3D. Pulls strong from a hover but not a rocket.

Hey zonker123
zonker123
I sent you a pm about the 70 os in this plane. I would love to know more about the switch over to the surpass.
Thanks

I have not tried a Tiger Shark .52 but have heard that they are a stronger running engine than the OS .46, the same size/weight and at $80.00 is inexpensive. I plan to buy one for my next .40 size plane.

As long as you keep the weight low, the more power the better - so an OS .50 or Saito .72 would be great! To get by a litte cheaper, a OS .46 w/a Tower muffler will do nicely (IMHO). There's a short vid here using the OS .46 if you're curios about the pull-out speed. This plane is actually a little heavier than stock b/c it's been repaired/recovered, so you can imagine what the Saito would do!
Good luck!

RE: Engine for Carl golderg Extreme 330
Does the muffler of the Webra 50 clear the wing of the Extreme 330? Or does it aim the exaust right at the leading edge of the wing.
Thanks,

RE: Engine for Carl golderg Extreme 330
I have had an Extreme 330 for a while now and have flown two engines on mine: an OS .46 FX and a Saito 72.
46: This was a nice engine, especially when I went to an 11.5 X 4 APC prop. IMHO this plane is not about speed, especially when you dial in 45+ degrees of throw so more pitch than that gets a little too fast for my taste. It had nice vertical and such, but to be honest, I was expecting more from this airplane.
72: After reading some posts about using this engine on this plane I decided to give it a try. Man, was I glad I did. It became a different airplane. It is probably my 2nd favorite now (I have 12 in the hangar).
I am using a 14 X 4W APC. A couple of cool things:
1) I can hit a particular throttle setting and hover, then go to regular flight and back to hover and never change a thing!
2) It does a maneuver that I can only describe as a snap-rolling circle. I go vertical then do outside inverted snap (full down elevator, full rudder, full opposite aileron, full throttle). It starts doing snap rolls and the best I can figure the torque from that big prop makes it do a circle. It does this while losing very little altitude. I'm trying to figure out how t make it maintain altitude but don't have it yet.
Okay, long-winded, so the short version is: Saito .72 with a 14 X 4W APC is my rec....

RE: Engine for Carl golderg Extreme 330
i out an os 61 FX on mine because that's what i had. It hovers and torque rolls great. Its a bit heavier than my other similar sized ships so it doesn't float quite as well, but it still harriers well. I feel its a pretty decent combo. I feel getting the CG right is key.

RE: Engine for Carl golderg Extreme 330
I've flown mine with a 46FX and a YS63. Both are nice, but the YS spins a 14x4 wideblade prop and that prop makes it into a whole nother plane in my opinion.
I'd go YS63 or Saito 72 or ther new OS 70 in this plane if I were doing it again.
