Well......... After a long run the Sledge is gone.
I let a buddy try it out tonight and it was a little much for him.
It took about 3 seconds for him to have it headed straight for the ground at full power.
I grab the TX and pull hard to get it pointed away from earth and the wing folded.
Kinda cool to watch.

I cannot be without a profile so ordered the CG Extreme 330.
Theres a guy who flies one here and it looks like it does pretty good.
It wont be the Sledge though.

I will DEFINATELY build another one but not untill my Extra is done.

Heres a pic from the last flight.

(Side note: The guy who was flying it had just soloed his Alpha trainer about 15 mins prior. I figured it was time to move him up. I was wrong.. :stupid: )

Wow. I figured it would take more than 2 posts for someone to ask about the wing folding... LOL

Brian,

Yes it folded.
It should have!

It was going faster than ANY profile should be flying and I had to YANK hard to try and stop it before it hit. I didnt even have time to get the throttle off.
However, My wing may not be as strong as anyone else's because I always opt to leave the Fiberglass tape off. For agressive flying like I did with this plane thats fine but with this dive and pull there was NO suprise it folded up.

THERE IS NO DESIGN FLAW IN THE SLEDGE FOR ANYONE READING THIS!

Well the good news is when your wings finally fold and you walk into the light the Sledge will be there waiting on you. I like to think that's where all good planes go. Sorry for the loss.

Sorry for your loss, If the wing is built with a one piece leading edge would it need the tape?

Kinda cool to watch......... he says.

I like this guy !!!!!!!!!!!

One time..... a guy brought out a semi-profile plane out to the field, he had been flying there for some time. He took off, and it was too much for him. I was surprised, I really thought he was up to the task. Schmucked big time. flew for about....... 15 secs.

then he STOMPTED on it, again and again. Well, it WAS his plane.
but temper, temper. My OH My !!!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I lost my Extra 300 last night.
We fly from a field that is basically carved out of a forest. It's lined with 70 ft tall trees and then a stream and then 15 ft tall bushes, vines, thorny stuff, you name it, for as far as the eye can see.
Unfortunately, I was the first at the field this evening and alone when it happenend.
I now know what they mean by a needle in a haystack.

On the other hand, I heard the Magic Extra was on sale.

What a coincidence!

But for now, I'll dust off the Big Stik.

Wayne, sorry to hear about your Sledge. It's too bad planes aren't immortal!

Billy,
I don't think that plane will be waiting for him "in the light"! What have you been drinking? Maybe too much Jack? Just kidding ya a bit!

Paul,

I still wont put the fiberglass tape on when I build another one.
Reason is, I can get a better glue joint on the wing to fuse with wood to wood than I can on wood to glass.

You've seen me fly the Sledge. I dont baby it. It held up for a long time.
This dive and pull was pretty much as extreme as you'd ever see and then some.
There was NO suprise when it folded.

I cant say for sure but I think it would have folded just outside the glass anyway.

Exuse me for a minute while I wipe the tears from my eyes
One fuse broke in half (typical profile break) twice on fairly normal (for a fun fly) landing.
One fluttered badly and was damaged. (didnt see that one myself)

Wayne, that’s interesting, I mean sad about the sledge. My Sledge also folded its wings this week. Mine however was not in the air. I ran out of gas in a hover about 5-7 feet up. Just enough room to flop forward and hit the ground on its feet. Not a mark anywhere on the plane...Just folded wings. I too did not put the fiberglass tape across the seam but put the fiberglass tape along the spar before I sheeted the center section. I too will rebuild but plan on using a one piece center section spar.

Bummer Wayne.

Well I guess everyone should go out and do straight down full throttle then pull up hard to see if the tape really will save the wing on their sledge's. J/K

I remember folding a profile hots a few years ago, but it was getting tired anyway, guess thats life in our world.

Wayne, I will be sad all day because of your loss! But, it was prolly getting time to have a new sledge anyway. I plan on buiding another one this winter, just because the one I have is getting ratty. You will prolly enjoy the extreme. They are not a sledge, and they are a little heavier, but they do fly pretty well. Well enough to get you by until you can have another sledge built. Now go out and give your sledge a proper ceremony! The best way I know is to sacrafice it to the airplane gods with fire! They favor fire you know? Its going to take a big man to light it, but its just something you have to do!

Wayne - About the wing joint... Are you using CA to join the wing to the fuse or epoxy or ?

Wayne you were using a Saito72 on yours right.
How did you like the 72.

I am thinking of putting my YS-63 on my sledge when it gets done.
