need help repairing magic landing gear
Guys, I need help repair the landing gear on my magic. The landing gear broke about 2" from the bottom. Its broke right below where the 2 wire comes together. How do I fix this.
I tried soldering but that didn't work. My solder (no lead silver in color) wouldn't stick to it. I tried ruffing it up with sand paper, and it still wouldn't hold. The solder would come off like water off a ducks back.

I bent the gear on my Magic on it's second landing. When I tried to straighten it, the gear snapped. I silver soldered it, but the wire snapped again, in a different place, when I tried to get it lined up. The wire on mine is way too brittle. So......I went to Lowes and picked up a couple of 24" sections of 1/8" round steel rod. I bent these into a copy of the Magic gear. At the joints, I cleaned the gear and wrapped the joints with bare copper wire and then soldered with common electrical solder. The gear has held up through 28 flights. It does bend on hard landings, but is easily straightened.

The landing gear is the weak link of the Magic. Do a search on magic landing gear. I can't remember who it was, but someone has a good set of replacement gear.
I got mine at the LHS. It's a Dubro or ?? plastic type.

Magic Landing gear
Search for KrazyLegs. Ray Randolph of Tetherite Plastics makes several fiber filled, nylon gear. He flies a Magic and had a gear for it he'll probably swear is indestructable. I have a set of his profile gear on my TopCap. Very nice. Longer than stock so I can run a 15" prop on my Saito .91.
I haven't tried the Magic gear, but if it is like the profile gear, it'll be good.
Your other alternative is a carbon fiber gear at at least twice the price.

Would you believe that I actually had my broken into 5 seperate pieces at one time.....and actually put them back together....and they held. I used old telephone wire that you find laying around. And I used regular solder but you need a torch to get the gear hot enough for the solder to flow.
It aint pretty but it works. This gear actually had the axle part broken seperate from the 2 halves about 2" from the end of the axle. I didnt think it would hold but the gear lasted longer the Magic......and that was quite a while.

what size motor are you running in that picture. I can't read the picture how many inches of ground clearance is that.
thanks,
Micheal

Hey Mike where did you break at? I have fixed several for some of the flyers here. Haven't had any problems getting solder to stick to them. Are you using any flux's?

propnut,
no flux here, just solder. It wouldn't work. I am not a soldering genius, I know what flux it just didn't have it. Solder won't even stick to to this wire. By the way, next time we are at a fly in together, remind me before we go, I have some old ST51 parts to give you. I don't remember whats left, but you can have what I got.

propnut,
I am going to try and make it to kennett, but I won't know until that sunday, if I am going or not. But I will bring the ST51parts if I come.

That goofy landing gear is part of the Magic's mystique. You can fix just about anything that breaks on that gear by wrapping with thin gauge wire and using JB Weld. I have repaired mine many times. You can also get a replacement gear for about $15.
I think one of the problems people are having is trying to takeoff and land this plane like a NORMAL plane. It is made to take off quickly in 4 or 5 feet and land VERY slowly and softly with little to no rollout. since I started flying it like this the gear has never broken. I also do not try and taxi it very far.
