Default RE: Lazy Tiger P-51 ? Engine Rec./ Servo Rec. / Grass Landing?

I checked the specs and 3.25 Lbs with the 288 sqin wing area is too heavy for me, the TT Lazy 51 is supposed to be 2.5 to 3.5 lbs with about 700 wing area and mine i guess is 3.5 with the about 700 sq in wing area it is a floater but and the Saito 40 is not powerful enough for me to fly FUN and with the tiquela only having half the wing area would be just not slow enough for me and still not be lighter than the 51. If it only weigh say 2 or less pounds I'd consider it.

Currently thinking Flip 3D 25 size but need to know the weight or the Mini 3D from extremeflight, but need info from users if they think the saito 40 will fit ok.

Thanks Dennis

J ust a note I read someome asking about the global tequlia sunrise it is junk. I would go with the model tech extra 300 .25 size I HAVE HAD BOTH PLAINS THE EXTRA IS TWICE THE PERFORMER AND DOESN'T FALL OUT THE SKY LIKE THE TEGUILA AT LOW SPEEDS YOUR .25 WILL BE GREAT IN IT. I bought one for my club raffle and checked it out - very nice construction. Hope to see the raffle winner at the field with it soon, it looks like a fun little plane!

Here's some pics of the tail. I used 1/2" balsa tri stock, removed covering from area where it touched the tail and fuse, then used 5 min empoxy and painted.

It's held up fine after some 50 flights, most of which involved pulling some pretty hard turns and loops.

And no wisecracks about the dirty tailwheel!

Here's the inside. I used 4-40 rods and added a lite-ply brace in the bulkhead to prevent bowing and possibly flutter. I also added a support for the receiver. Not my best work, but it flies very nice. Touch & Goes with a long rollout are my favorite with this one.

Sorry to take so long to get back, great pics, looks good, doing the same to mine. One outher thing, Im running the OS 40LA, Is the 11-4 prop a good one for power and low speed?

I'm using a 10-5 on my 40LA. It seems to work fine and better than the 10-6. Funny, but my Avistar likes the 10-6 more.

One thing about the engine mount, I just had two screws break. One at the head, the other in the middle of the mount. Luckily, my LHS had the exact same mount in stock for $4 so I didn't have to waste a lot of time trying to remove the screws.

Also, I don't think there is any right thrust built into this plane. I always had to have 5-7 clicks of right aileron to compensate. I'm going to install this new mount with a washer or two under the backplate to put some right thrust in it. We'll see how it goes.

Let me know how the washers work out, havent finished mine yet, but would like it great on its first run. Also, can you shave the former to put a 8oz tank in?[sm=sunsmiley.gif]

Just putting mine together now. Was planning to use a new OS 30 4-stroke on it. I fly off a pretty rough grass field, and dont plan on tearing up the sky with the plane. Like the slow aspect of the design. I guess my question is will the 30 be enough to fly the plane like I want...slow and lazy, or do I need to put something more up front. I have an OS 25 FP, OS 25 FX and OS 40 that can go there if needed.

Your advice or comments, gentlemen!

I had a Magnum 30 4 stroke on mine and it flew it great. It flew it just the way you want. Slow and Lazy. I have since put an OS40 4 stroke on it but have not had a chance to fly it since. I just wanted a little more vertical out of mine but the 30 flew it great!

I bought the first one the LHS could get in when they came on the market and haven't been disappointed either. Of course mine doesn't have a muffler sticking out the side. [8D]

Just be careful of picking it up by the front of the wing, those little false spars don't like a lot of pressure. I know. [:@]

Phys_WRX,
You don't have to brace the tail if you intend to fly it slow. If you are going to fly some hard aerobatics, I would brace the tail surfaces as shown, or with flying wires. I also recommend the internal "bulkhead" for the two pushrods going to the tail area. They are pretty flimsy and will cause some flutter at higher speeds. See pic below:
Silverhawk,
what motor are you using? Are you also using Li-poly's? I may have to try that.

whstlngdeath,

I'm using a Mega 22/20/3, 2.5:1, 12x6, and 12 - 14 2000's.

There is so much wing area and it was built so light I just had to do the electric power in it. It loves to float around and I thermalled it once. It's no speed demon but will keep up with any .40 size trainer or scale plane at the field.

I would love to try Lipo's in it but I just have too many other projects going right now.

BTW, this one was mid-aired at NEAT 2 years ago when a Zagi came over the top and took off the tail. It's been re-glued and is flying again.

I do have a HP.40 with a pipe on the shelf that I would love to put in another one too.

Keep 'em hummin'

Is the lazy tiger difficult to land?-Does it have a tendency to nose over? If so is there a mod that can be mde to correct?

Hi cheli, and welcome to RCU.
The Lazy Tiger has a light wing loading and it will slow down to walking speed without stalling.
With a slight headwind, you may have trouble getting it to land! I've had mine float two feet off the runway from one end to the other on idle speed. It's basically a kite with power. Three point landings are very easy, and sometimes the only way it will land.
I fly off of a paved runway, and it hasn't nosed over yet. On grass it might. You can bend the wire gear slightly forward and put bigger tires on it and that should help on grass. This thing is a blast to fly. I recommend one.

It's a piece o' cake to land and will do two wheel rollouts for as long as you want (with a little throttle management). I have yet to nose it over - the closest I ever came was one time I nicked the prop as I was playing with the throttle while on two wheels.

It's a fun little plane - I've had a blast with this plane and my little OS .40LA. I recommend adding some stripes or extra coloring to the wings - that grey can get pretty small in a hurry.

I've nose mine over on a grass field but I also have made the main gear 1" longer to accomodate a bigger prop.

Yup, even with a 14 cell battery it will still float down the runway.

The one I have seems to land itself, I used mine as a Trainer and Self Taught with it, No buddy box nor instructor, The Plane is still in one piece, I'm playing with Burritto 3D plane now, When I get a chance Ill enlarge the Elevator and Rudder and make it a 3D 51 :-).

I use the light 3 inch Super Lite Dubro Wheels not the regular Lite ones but Super Lite to help with the Noseovers.

I also Took out the Elevator rod and put in 2 4-40 trods to stop flutter.

Have Fun I love mine.

what motor are you runnung? Do you land on grass? Did the bigger tire help-and did you change the wing to a bolt on or still a rubber band model?
