Default MVVS 49

I ordered a Sledge the other day guy at the hobby shop asked what engine I was going to run on it I told him a OS46 he said I should run a MVVS 49. The few people I have talked to
down here dont't agree with him. I heard they changed the carb. and pipe and the engine are suppose to be better now. Please let me know what you all think. I can still change my order.

I have two of them I am trying to get rid of.

They run best on FAI or 5% nitro and I cannot get any up here.

PM me if any questions I have asked them all about the MVVS .49

I ran one on my sledge. It has tons of power... It likes to run in the higher RPM's, so the bigest prop I could run was a 11.5 x 4.. It transitioned okay... Don't ever run anything more than 5% nitro.

For my money.... I'd go with the Webra .50.... Just out performs everything else out there... and it a full ounce lighter than most... ounce and a half less that the OS .50...

Paul, I've been meaning to ask you to detail the Web .50. Could you do a thread describing the engine, and why you love it so much. I was thinking about going to the Irvine .53 and you surprised me with the webra. Give us prop sizes, estimated power advantages (like 25% more power), fuel desires, and whatever else.

Since I think God created the OS .50 I really need details to change, but I am willing.

Thanks

Georgec, I run the MVVS 49 on all my sledges and other profiles. I really like it and I would recommend it. Now there are other good engines but the MVVS 49 is very reliable. That makes it a good hover engine because of its reliability. Jeff W.

I like my MVVS .49. It has plenty of power and is one of the sweetest running engines I have had. I have owned plenty. The .49 also has great transition.

Because thats what I run in the rest of my planes.

I really like my Irvine .53. Has great power and transitions really smooth.... Pulls a nice big prop.. Like the APC 12 x 4 and 12.25 x 3.75. Runs on 5%- 15% nitro. I like to run 10% with 20% oil... Runs nice and cool when you torture them all day pointing straight up...

My Webra runs equally as well... Maybe just a tiny bit more power... Just a tiny... Likes the same props... Maybe a little harder to set the needle. Same fuel.

Here's the kicker though....

Webra w/muffler: 15 5/8 oz.
Irvine w/muffler: 18 oz.

A full 2 3/8 oz. lighter.... that's a lot of beans buddy!!

The MVVS .49 is 17 1/2 oz with the stock pipe and header.

You can just ask your LHS to get you one.... They're going for around $129 everywhere I look... Last time I asked, the LHS said they could match that price....

Horizon, Quantum and Lone Start Balsa has 'em...

OK - Guys, I'll through my 2 cents in the ring! <LOL> Anyone that knows me, knows that all I run now is the Webra 50s! I have at least 8 of them now. I've run the OS, Rossi, MVVS, etc. etc., in search of something better, but keep going back to the Webra 50. I find it extremely reliable! As Paul stated, the needle can be finicky to set on a Webra, but that is also that we Fun Fly guys are always looking for that perfert needle setting and just a little more power! That is in our nature! <LOL> Ask the guys that were at Nashville, TN Pro-Bro and saw me there. I can't tell you how many guys came up to me while I was flying and asked, "what motor do you have on there? That thing has awesome power!" My Webra 50 pulls my Aeron 40 (repaired how many times? - Thereby its heavy for a profile) still hovers it as less than 1/4 throttle! [X(] I had to program in expo on the throttle because 1 click of the throttle stick would make it climb out unlimited vertical [X(] The Webra is light! And an awesome powerhouse! [>:] Needless to say, you need to get what is supported around you, and you are comfortable with. Obviously, I am comfortable with the Webra 50!
Good Luck!
Kevin

About 12 years ago a huge "power -to - weight engine review was done by one of the main model magazines. The WEBRA BULLY was #1. The WEBRA .50 was #3. There was alot of near identical power sums between the engines, but when they divided the power figures into what the engine weighed, that's when the truth came out.

In the standard configuration, MVVS engines are setup to take FAI fuel. (80/20/0)
Most engines accept 5% nitro without modifications, and some will even accept up to 20% nitro.
If you run more nitro, and the engine becomes balky, or starts wearing out plugs fast, all that is needed is to add one or two shims under the head.
This modification tunes the engine for nitro use, and is not harmful. The power gain using 15% nitro is quite substantial.

Well, that is true Kevin, your system was powerful. But to be fair to whoever might want to try a Webra, tell us what muffler/pipe you were using. The only thing I heard more than how much power you had was how loud it was. I remember asking you about it, but don't remember the answer. I'd love that power, but my club would disown me if it sounded like that!!! (That's not meant to be offensive, just what I remember)

I fitted the Hobbico muffler to my webra 50. It gave it more power. It is quieter than the stock muffler. This is the 14 dollar muffler that looks like the Nelson tuned muffler. Also the type on the GMS 47. I agree the Webra 50 is a great engine.

How did you fit the Hobbico muffler on the webra? I thought the bolt pattern was different...

Very carefully. The hole spacing is very close. I took a drill about the size of the hole for the muffler in the engine. I moved it back and forth and enlaged the holes. You have a lot of meat to play with on the ends, but in the middle there is much metal. This is where you have to be careful. You could also drill out the muffler and run the screws all the way through and put a nut on it. Dubro makes a 50mm by 3mm screw which should be long enough.
