I am about to built a new funfly from scratch.
My last plane was a dazzler.
I have an os 40 fx engine.
here are my 2 options:
Mustang funfly
wasp
I want slow flying, good 3d performer
what should i choose?

If you are really going to scratch it build the wasp. Its a very easy build. The wasp doesnt excel at everything, but it definitely excels at hovering which you will easily be able to do all day with a 46.

I used a TT 46 on mine.... I think it would fly with a strong 32 or 36!!! If you build it light, it comes out to a little less that 4 lbs.
But the TT 46 is perfect... and really cheap right now!! It's only $75 new at QuantumModels.com!!

Might be...... If it's really strong.... That engine actually weighs more than the .46..... http://www.osengines.com/engines/fx.html
Give it a shot. You can always bold up a .46 later....

I second Super Wasp option.
I have one from 2 moths ago and love it, in fact i can hover forever, do nice climbing flat spins, tight loops, harrier and i'm actually trying elevators too. Knife edge is not as good but i still like this one. .40 FX should be enough, mine hovers at less than 1/2 throtle using Byron 15% and MA 11x5 (i know this is not the best prop) so you could be using 11x4.

If you use a tuned pipe... be carefull!!! Tuned pipes are a little finicky.... You want to tune for midrange, not high end.... you also want the engine to be very reliable...... It's not pretty when your engine flames out while hovering 5 ft. off the deck... ask me how I know....
I'd go with the standard exhaust and a 10 x 5 prop and see how she goes.... Just build it really light and do the super wasp mods... You can also build up the ailerons and elevator, make the rudder out of 1/4" sq and use 1/4 balsa for the spars to kill some weight.... Don is experimenting with a built up fuse to reduce weight... My next wasp will be built this way.... He did his 1 1/2" wide so that he could mount a servo in the bottom of the fuse.... Kinda cool....

have you considered the Aeron-40. Scratch Builder Plans are available at:
http://www.hsrcm.com
Tuned pipes do not have to weigh any more, and allot of times less than the stock muffler. I normally run the Mac Headers and and Mac long tuned pipes. This combo typically the same weight or less than the stock muffler, of course this combination does not have a baffle either. I've noticed that the tuned pipes that have baffles are much heavier. I assume it is because of not only the baffle itself, but the material to retain the baffle, and the construction requirements that you usually see to be able to remove the baffle too.
Hope that this gives you some additional insight!

nice plug!! hehe. What exactly are you wanting to do with your funfly? if its hovering and your short of money I would go with the wasp(you can download the plans), its designed by an aussie
but it hovers very well.
The mustang and aeron style planes are all decendends of the Morris Hobbies range. After looking at the aeron I would probably reccomend that, it seems well designed and light and your existing motor would easily power it. Personally I would stay away from the pipe, they work with the smaller high reving engines but for a funfly you need the INSTANT throttle response that a standard muffler gives.

you can make a tuned mouuse exhaust for about 2.00 excluding the header. when you are finished it will improve the engine's output and weigh less than most any after market tuned pipe and less than any factory exhaust.

3DMike - realize that if you tune the header (by cutting it) so that it is 1/4" to 1/2" longer than you would for max. RPM, you push the power band down more into the midrange RPMs, where you want it for a Fun-Fly. A header and tuned pipe will not effect the throttle response, in fact by pushing the power band down, you can 'get on the pipe' quicker and throttle response is better!!!
