Default ELECTRIC .40 PROFILE PLANE - 2 to 1!

I wanted to prove that it could be done. I personally had not seen a .40 profile that was equal in power to a glow motor. WELL I HAVE NOW!
I took an AXI 4120/14, a Jeti Advance 77 controller, 5s4p 1500 Kokams and a 16x10 prop. I'm making 1,200 amps and pushing around 1,500 ounces of thrust. The power is actaully scary! It will go verticle better than any glow powered plane I own. I am very impressed. It will hover at exactly half throttle. It has so much power I'm thinking about going down to a 4s4p battery. All I did was put 3 and 2 cell 1500s into a series and then connect them to a parallel board.
Here are some pics:

probably wouldn't be too much, but the charger would kill it...thats what kept me out of the foamie loop, couldn't find a charger cheap enough for a college student.

Consider that once you have the charger and the batteries, you are done spending money.

No fuel, no ni-starter, no glow plugs, no dinking with the engine because it won't run right, no dead-sticks, no cleaning gunk off the plane.

Electrics are still more expensive than glow, especially at first. The price differential is getting less.

I may have to buy one - my last electric was a kit-built e-streak with a brushless a few years ago before I got into 3D. They were fun and had their advantages.

Ulfy
I haven't seen yours yet but I have heard about it. Even after hearing about yours I still wasn't ready for the power this thing had. I know a 4s4p would work and I'm betting a 4s3p would work but I would want the extra fly time.
I'm charging with the Astro Flight Lithium charger. It can charge the whole pack in an hour at 6 amps.
I still don't know how long it will fly. Maybe Wed.

I just checked HL site for an Axi combo. I was planning to buy the 4130-16 and the 77opto controller. Last friday it was $299 now it's $329.
Billy, is there an extra 0 in your thrust quote? That 1500 is like 93lbs. Now there's some vertical pull!!!

How long will these batts last? I've heard 100 cycles, is that reality? If so, that's about the same or more per flight than Glow. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it. But I fly like 5 days a week when the weather allows (almost all year) and on a good day I'll do 15 or more flights. I'd like to electrify a Taco, but I want it to be more than a novelty!!! I want to fly the SNOT out of it!

No Lithium Polymers should last if taken care of properly and only discharged 60-80% which is like 1-2 mins less flying time a good 300-500 cycles. Thunderpower has some packs that have lasted up to 500 cycles and more. Just depends how well the cells are balanced at the factory

That's better for sure. I'm also impressed with Billy's charge time/current. I thought Ulf said 6 hours to charge the Spider Sledge. If you had a few batts, 1 hour aint so bad.

[X(] nonononononono.......... Mine takes about 45 minutes to an hour to charge if 80% empty (less of course, if I only fly it one flight and charge). I use the same charger as Billy (Astroflight 109D), and also charge at 6 Amp's. I thought I had a longer flying time, but do get about two 10 minute flights out of the Spiderman Sledge. My battery his hidden and build into the wing, so changing it out is unfortunately out of the question []. Looks better though . I just fly something else meanwhile the battery is charging. We all do have more then one plane don't we ?

Billy, what is your final weight RTF ?

Cool Ulf, thanks. That sounds better and better. 45 minutes charge and 20 minutes flying. Sounds fine to me. I'm interested again.

Hey Billy,
With all that power you found available, would it be enough for OMP's 65" Yak? I'm still trying to decide which route I want to go. I'm looking at the 4130-16 combo for my Fury heli. It wouldn't take much to also use that motor on the Yak or something a bit bigger if needed. It would make it more financially feasible if the same motor, controller and batteries could be swapped around to different airframes with minimal effort.
Thanks,,,basmntdweller

Ok I've found a combo with a 4120/14 and a jeti controller 70 not 77. same power or do I need to buy seperate items? secondly if you don't mind what type of batteries are you using...I see your wrote 5s4p 1500kokams but could you elaborate on that, this is my first electric. I'm going to use this setup on a extreme flight 540 profile plane that weighs in at 4.4 pounds with a 46fx...similar weight with electric setup?

and also those kokams aren't lipoly are they?

Joe, check out www.parkflyermotors.com for a much better deal on the AXI 4120/14. Just checked and it's at $139 right now. I have made several purchases from them and I can't recommend them enough. No, I am not afdfiliated with them, just a very happy customer. You might also save on a speed controller and batteries, but I haven't compared prices on them so not sure. I only use Castle Creations speed controllers and parkflyermotors sells them a a good price.

I tried to use the JESA 70 and I was pushing too many amps. I had to move up to the 77 opto. I think a 4s4p pack might be the perfect match and get the weight down to 5 lbs.
The way I built my pack was to just put in series a 3 cell 1500 and a 2 cell 1500. Then I strung four of those togher with a parallel board.

Joe T.
Yes they are LiPo. If this is your first electric you will be jumping right into latest technology.

John VH - How much will it weigh? You might be in the 4130 zone with that bird.

I will say that I have been glow since I started but it is pretty amazing to just set down you plane, turn a switch on and take off. I got to the field at 8 am last week and flew at least 4 flights and maybe 5. I was there until noon. I don't have a total time but she the exact same until the end and left me with enough juice to get back in. This is the future.
