What would be a good choice for a good first profile Fun Flyer. I have just started to get comfortable with my trainer and, while I am not ready to start flying 3D, I would like to find a good first plane to build and have ready when I am ready to take her up.
Thanks,
Victor

BURRITO
It's inexpensive, easy to build, tough, easy to fly (prolly easier than your trainer) and Paul's support is second to none.
I beat you to this one gordo

My first profile is a Morris Su-Do-Koi ARF and I have an Irvine 53 on it. Very responsive plane without being "twitchy". This is a great plane and I would highly recommend it. The only bad tendency it has is to nose over while taxying, but a little up elevator (or bigger wheels) takes care of that.

Dang it!!!!! Take one day off and BAM you're no longer the first guy to reply to the almost daily question!!! I'll be back on top, just wait!!
Anyway, Burrito, great choice. It has a very special construction method not found on any other .40 sized prifile. It has a Carbon Rod through the fuse, thus preventing the all to common failure: Fuse-broke-behind-the-wing itis. You won't be sorry.

Hey, anyone else think we should get a sticky for this one? Maybe a Profile FAQ?

I think it's time for the Burrito to have it's own sub-forum

I would like to thank you all for your input. A friend recommended that I build a Fazer, but from everything I have read, it is not nearly as good as the new planes available. I really would like to build the kit, am not a big ARF fan, they have there place, but I really enjoy the build.
From everything I have read the Burrito looks like a great plane, but was unsure how good it would be for a beginner, or near beginner, hence my question. I do hate to restart threads or ask questions that have been asked ad nauseum, but there was not a whole lot of info regarding whether someone who is just mastering a trainer could transition to the Burrito.
Our club has several fun fly days a year and I really wanted to find a plane to fly so that I could join in. It looks like a lot of fun, and the profiles I have seen fly do some really cool maneuvers.
Once again thanks for your input, and sorry if I am asking a question that has been asked to death.

I honestly think the burrito will be easier to fly than a trainer. It flys slower and the only thing you have to watch out for, is that it wont roll back to level after a turn because there is no dihedral in the wing. I cant think of a better plane to transition from a trainer to. Just remember, these planes are most fun when flown slow and for basic sport flying will give you alot of correction time when flown that way. My 8 & 9 year old boys are learning to fly on a burrito and twist 3d and neither has flown except on the FMS sim.

I agree with Bill. If you can fly a trainer, you can fly a Burrito. Keep these things in mind:
1. Keep the throws low at first. The surfaces are very large, so set it up with dual rates and move slow. I find I need expo on the rudder due to lots of rudder authority.
2. This plane is not meant to fly fast. If you put a decent engine on it, you will spend most of your time less than 1/2 throttle. I wouldn't prominse it, but I think you could put a 15 engine on this thing and it would fly. (not 3D of course)
3. with the wing planform it is very forgiving and as said before will fly very slow. If the CG is right it will float like a feather and won't stall without a very steep angle of attack. Don't be tempted to go nose heavy. I really think that makes it much harder on one of these style planes.
4. Learn to use the rudder right from the start. If you fly this baby with ailerns only you'll never learn to 3D, and slow/harrier flight REQUIRES rudder to keep flying.
5. Last, I found out the hard way that all flying is harder to learn up in the stratiphere. It's tempting to go real high to learn, but you really need to see the plane to learn 3D. I figure a screw up 6" off the deck is safer than 10' up. Bizzarro and I have dorked our Burritos SO OFTEN you wouldn't think they would still be flying. They both l;ook almost new. We were gonna build backups, but so far we just haven't felt the need.

Thanks again for all your input. I just put in my order for a Burrito and will have to clear a space on my bench. Too many projects going at once.
Anyway, as I would like to eventually do 3D what engine would you reccomend? I have a 40LA not doing anything, but would rather go with a 4-stroke.

Wow... I have a cult following... Kinda scary but cool [sm=lol.gif]
Victor - The engine of choice for me has been the Webra .50 Tons of power and a full ounce lighter that anything else out there. I've also flown it with a OS 46 FX, ST 51, Irvine .53 and a MVVS .49... All were great engines, I just have a personal preference toward the Webra.
As far as 4 bangers go, I know a Saito .72 or YS .63 would work too.... I just haven't had the oportunity to fly a Burrito with either of those two engines.
Your 40 LA would fly it... but it wouldn't be good 3d power... you won't be able to hover with that motor.

If you want a 4 stroke, OMP has the YS .63 at a good price and offers special deals on shipping to Pro-Bros, but I am with Paul on the Webra .50 it is soooo strong, light and reliable.

What is the best source for Webra engines. I see them at Chief, but was wondering if there is a better source. Looks like it packs a lot of power for its weight.

I've bought most of mine, used here on RCU.... However, my LHS said they could get a new one for me for $125... You might check with your LHS. If they can't help you, go with Chiefs or Horizon.

Well, I like the 4 bangers now, so that would be my choice. You'll give up several ounces, but the sound alone is worth that to me. Mine has a new Saito .72 (nothin against YS, just never had one) and it's very good. Plenty of power, bigger prop seems to make steadier hover/TR and did I mention the sound?
Bill and I both had .46 2S on them and they were just ducky too, so you can't really go wrong (well, unless you use that LA
) Bill has the webra .50 on his Sledge and it's really great (not as good as my Saito .91 but.........) You know, you might not want to listen to me..........They're coming to take me away!!!!!
