Default Irvine 53: Best Prop for funfly/3d

I've got a nearly finished SU-DO-KHOI that is on the resonably heavy end of the scale (thanks to some mods.). Power is to be an irvine 53. I was wondering what would be the best prop for an irvine 53 that would give the plane good funfly/3d style performance?

I've been using MA 12x4's (4 stroke) on all of my 40 size stuff, seems to spool up and hang better than the APC's or wood. The Irvine 53 might work with a 13x6, I haven't stuck one on yet.

I was happy with my 12x4 on mine, tried a 12.25x 3.75 didn't seem to change much. I think 12" is a must, 13x3 might work never tried it

11x7 would make the fastest Sud in history! Most ProBros with the Irvine debate between the APC 12x4 and 12.25x3.75, try everything you can get in the range and see what you like. The 12.25 will deliver more thrust for a heavier plane, but it has disadvantages too.

I'd have to agree... I like the 12.25 x 3.75 apc prop the best on this engine... I also like the 12 x 4 apc and even the 11.5 x 4 apc on hot days...

yep, I was using a 12.25 x 3.75 APC on my Sudokhoi and the Irvine 53. Now I haver the engine on a Extreme stick, and like the 12x4 APC better on that plane. You have to try and see what you like better. No matter what, I would stay with an APC prop for sure.

They're wide.. but not designated as such... Both the 12.25 x 3.75 and the 11.5 x 4 are old control line props.... They work great for 3d.

Definately 12". my boy flew a somethin' extra for a long time on one with a mac's pipe and found a 12-6 apc the best for that setup. on the engine review by clarence lee a few years back, he found the irvine had more torque than any comparable 53 size. We found that to be true, it didn't like to rev like their 46, but had plenty grunt, turned 12-6 like most 40's turn a 10-6. play around some, but try the 12-6; the s.e. weighed about 6 lbs.

Dave I use the 11.5 -5 Grupner prop with good luck. It is about the same weight as a APC and with 10% nitro it runs fine I also have a Moose can muffler Helps delver the lower spooling RPM. However if I run 15% it will run to hot and sputter giving me warning it is to hot. I may try a 12-4 APC to keep it running cooler.

I have the Irvine 53 on a Funtana 40 and have tried many APC props. The 12-6 is good, the 13-4 is awesome and so is the 12.25-3.75. I would have to say that my favorite is the 12.25-3.75. The 13-4 is a very close 2nd.

The 12-4 is under propped IMO. It can turn a 12-6 no problem.

P.S. RPMs with a 13-4 at 700 feet (215m) above sea level was 11,600 using Omega 15%. Thrust-O-rama.

Well, i stand corrected. Took the advice by a clubmate to try an APC 13x4 W and it transformed the flying; Vertical at half throttle, control in the (attempted) prop hang was vastly improved.

So, APC 13x4 W or 12.25 x 3.75![sm=thumbup.gif]

I highly recommend the APC 12.25 x 3.75.
Works like a charm
