well i built it and it looks like its going to work. i had the carbon fiber square rod lying around, so i said what the hell and popped it in

That will absolutely work, and be very strong. When I built mine I just used the pine because I had it, but I went all out with 4 carbon fiber 4mm tubes in the pbf for extreme stiffness and another 1 in the elevator to keep that from losing any control due to the massive size of the surface. Worked great.
