does anyone use a smoke system on 40-50 sized models?
do you use 2 or 4 stroke engines?
how well do they work?
any photos would be nice, thanks.

I am setting up a smoke system on a 60 sixty size plane with a OS91FX the plane is not ready to fly yet. But tapping into the back plate of the crank case on a 2 stroke and using that pressure is the best way to go also wrapping some tubing around the head or muffler to preheat the smoke oil makes a big difference. A 4 stroke requires a pump to get the smoke oil to the exhaust. It is much more complicated and heaver. You may find it increases your wing loading to the point that you loose performance. That is why I am putting mine on a sixty size plane and not any thing smaller.

This is a 60 size Goldberg Staudacher with an OS 90 two stroke and a Perry's smoke pump tapped into the back of the engine. It has a pitts muffler that has two pieces of brass tubbing running through the muffler to preheat the oil before it is actually dumped in to the muffler. The oil goes through the muffler twice before it is dumped in.............John

i used a TME smoke pump on a goldberg chipmunk...the only issues were weight issues...else the pump works well with the OS91 FS. Frankly, the chipmunk with that power can handle the extra weight, so I would say look into the TME pumps..they are simple to use.

The thing is... Is it worth the extra weight you are going to be carrying around? I tried smoke on my GMS76 with a pre-heater in the muffler and even then it didn't produce enough smoke to make it worth the extra weight. The key is to get the oil so hot that it almost evaporates before it hits the muffler and two strokes do not get that hot...
