EF Edge 540 Wing/Fuse Joint Help!
Help!
I'm trying to get the wing and fuse glued together on my Extreme Flight Edge 540 profile ARF, but I'm concerned about the effectiveness of using epoxy for this joint. I know that epoxy would be better, structurally, but the fit between the wing and fuse is very tight. I just can't figure how to keep any epoxy in there as I slide the wing into the fuse.
Any ideas?
I'm considering using thin CA, and just wicking it into the joint from around the edges, but I'm not sure this will be strong enough.
Please, anyone who has experience with epoxying these types of wings and fuselages together, help!!!
Thanks!
-Wayne

RE: EF Edge 540 Wing/Fuse Joint Help!
I used the thin CA method with great success. I use a little baking soda to fill any little gaps and then soak with thin CA. I have turfed mine many times, broke it in half behing the wing twice and cracked it there several times and had the engine quit in a hover about 20 foot high and dove straight in but the wing to fuse joint has held beautifully. Thin CA and baking soda is the only glue I used on mine.
I really hate sliding parts together with epoxy because you essentially scrape off most of the epoxy when you slide them together.
Good Luck,,,Matt

Slide the wing in place without glue and set it in the correct position.
Run a pencil around the edge where the fuse meets the wing. Top and bottom.
Remove the wing and cut the covering away just inside the line you just drew.
Mix up some 30 minute epoxy and paint it on the exposed wood on the wing.
Slide the wing into place. The epoxy will run out the one side as your pushing the wing in but thats ok.
I then wrap my finger in wax paper and make an epoxy fillet with the glue that pushed out.
No go back and get some more epoxy and make the fillet for the other side.
Works well.

Thanks guys,
I think I'll give the epoxy a try as Wayne (wgeffon) suggested. I'll keep some rubbing alchohol on hand just in case I don't like the results.

RE: EF Edge 540 Wing/Fuse Joint Help!
I did what Wayne recommends. It held really well.
Today I was doing a knife edge / hover / harrier about 4 feet off the ground in heavy wind where I would knife edge and hold it there just feet off the ground without moving.
Anyway the fuel line came off the engine and it hit wing first and then flipped and hit hard. Hard enough to crack the plane in half behind the wing. But the joint at the wing didn't budge at all.

You may use CA, even thin CA on this plane because the wing joint is so good. Normally I glue all my profile wings in with CA, if you want to use epoxy, I like Waynes pencil method but you can also use masking tape to contain the epoxy mess, and of course rubbing alcohol on a paper towel is a must.
