Hi
I just acquired a used Cobra. it is actually a scaled up version of the .40 cobra that was scaled to a .60 siuze, in which I will install a saito 91. the builder , which by the way is an excellent and renowned one, said it flies great. He is not very much into 3D so i was wondering what I should expect from this plane. He also mentioned this plane is not supposed to take off from the ground but rather to be hand launched. He said it is very hard to get airborne from runaway. I suppose that that´s because when the plane site on the ground it seems that the wing and the tail are leveled with the ground. I was thinking about mixing down ailrerons with up elevator and hoping that this setup would take care of that. What do you cobra owners think of that? your opinions about the overall flying characteristics of this plane.
Here´s a pic of the beast!!
Thanks

I assume that you are talking about the Hovering Cobra....
I did like mine a lot, lost it due to the elevator linkage getting undone....
It was a very good hovering airplane pretty easy, the only drawback was the weak back end....when snapping the airplane it would twist a lot.

The Cobra is very easy to hover. It flies okay but not great. The only time I did R.O.G take off was on the very first flight to trim it out. Rest of the take offs were hand launched. Very easy to do. I held the plane at a 45 deg angle, full throttle and let go. It would fly out of my hand.

I highly recommend the Cobra. I scratch built a cobra a couple of years ago but I highly modified the fuse and wing construction making it also a little larger. Flying it with a YS63 and its by far the easiest plane to hover and torque roll I've ever owned and flown including some 33% and 35% planes. It doesn't do everything great but for hovering... You can't beat it. Building one for a friend and a spare for myself now!

BTW. had the same problem with takeoffs... solved it by mixing about 3/8 down ailerons to serve as flaps and turn off after airborn. I fly with flaperon mixed throughout the flight.

The cobra will take off on the runway but it takes a little longer to get airborne because it is a very slow plane due to the thick wing so it takes a while to get enough ground speed. But you should expect alot from this airplane!! And that's not an understatement!! This airplane does things that its not made to do. But then again if it is to heavy than it wont do jack!! So how much does this thing weigh???

Man I wish I still had mine! Boy I'll tell you what, if I ever saw one as nice as Dansy had, I would buy it at almost any price. I'm sorry about your missfortune. I had a surpass 70 on mine with a custom bolly 12.2X 3.75 prop and I could walk it around in a hover 1in from the ground like a dog on a leach
I would be interested in a new one if anyone has a VERY clean and light one??? BENDER

I am aware of only one version. This model has a fuselage length of apx. 48"
I got tired of trying to find kits of this great design about a year ago. I contacted Bolly. They said it was out of production, and that they had sold the rights to a company in New Zealand. I contacted them and they said they had no plans to prouce the kits. By chance I found a kit on ebay. I copied the plans and all of the laser cut pieces not shown on the plans. I had someone scan all of this into CAD to enable me to have the parts laser cut. To finance this I had to sell the kit. (Sounds crazy, but I made enough off the sell of the kit to pay for the CAD work and the laser time for the first two "kits") My intention was not to make this a commercial venture, merely creating a source for replacement parts for myself.
The design now uses English measurement woods instead of the mix of metric and English the original used. Otherwise the design is identical.
The plans have not been redrawn yet. I am using the original plans (or actually copies of the original plans.)
If any of you guys want more information PM me or email [email protected]
