Default Teatherite gear mounting

Just go a set of Teatherite gear for my Su-do-khoi. Looks strong but the part of the gear that bolts to the fuse is tapered. By tapered, I mean the gear thickness changes where the mounting bolts seat, so the boltheads and nuts don't sit flat on the gear. Anybody else see this on gear they've bought? I think it will work but I don't understand why it's tapered. Would have been better just to leave it one thickness. Maybe I'm missing somethin'......
