Default SPOILER engine ?

Phil,

I do not own a spoiler, but since you aren't getting much help I thought I'd let you in on my OBSERVATIONS.

I have personnally watched Jerry fly his spoiler on several occasions. His is powered by a FUEL INJECTED O.S. 1.60 (2s). The power is un-godly. The thing flies strait up as fast as it does horizontally at 1\3 throttle!! A couple of other spoilers I have seen all flew with the CARBUERATED O.S. 1.60 (2s) and had similar performance.

I asked Jerry and he said that if built lite, It would probably do hoverbatics on a hot .90.

Hope this helps
Michael

Jeff Williams - Designer of the Morris Hobbies Sledge 540, has a Spoiler with an OS 160. He let me fly it. I admit that his engine had a problem with air in the fuel line at the time, but considering, it flew great with the OS 160. It was not fuel injected. When it ran right, it flew with authority. Hover fine, and pulled out of a hover well. Seems to be a good combination.

I have just finished a Spoiler and have a Magnum 120 AR on it. I haven't flown it yet, but had the same engine on a Big Boy and it flew great. At 9.0 lbs. it would hover at 3/4 throttle and climb out of a hover with authority. The Spoiler weighs 9lbs. and 4 ozs. with the same wing and I expect the same kind of performance out of the Spoiler. I don't know about you, but I think the Big Boy was a whole lot easier to build then the Spoiler and hope I can see some advantage to this design.

jplaneman,
Wow, that Spoiler must be way tail heavy as it is on that picture he he. I am surprised your spoiler came in so light, is that RTF, or just the plane?
I have the short kit, and have bought the wood and carbon to build it. I have a YS140FZ for this plane, probably swinging an apc 17x8.

Thanks a lot for your input. It's always helping to compare
the differente experience.
I watched the BIG BOY video from Hobbies Morris.
Jerry Smith was using a Webra 1.20.
Seems awesome power, unlimited vertical.
Looks the way to go .

Thanks again

Default Webra 120 vs New Bully

Phil, if you are leaning towards a Webra 120, there is a company in CA that takes the Webra 120 and modifies it to have an anadized head with 2 glow plugs, they change the sleeve to give it hotter timing, and change the carb. I saw a write-up in RC Report quite a while ago. They compared the Webra, TT, and Moki, and Bully (this is what they call it after the old bully - I guess) 120s. They ranked them in this order. They said that the new Bully was the best overall. Their pricing is very reasonable too, unless you already have a Webra 120. The new Bully, I believe was $249. I've seen them advertise in the AMA mag. If I stumble across it, I'll post their website. Maybe someone elese out there can remember it.

The Spoiler in the picture above was an aircraft I built for a gentleman in Ohio. I built one for me at the same time and it has a ready to fly weight of 9lb 4oz. I flew my airplane this morning and had run-in headaches with the engine. By the time I got the engine to run properly it was time to watch the race so I didn,t get a very good readout on aircraft performance. I'll try it again tomorrow and hopefully get a better picture of how it performs.

Jplaneman, as Kevin has said I do have a spoiler with an OS 160 FX. IMO there is no other engine for that plane. Even Jerry Smith switched from the Webra 120 to the OS 160 after seeing mine fly. He came up with a mousse can pipe you must have on the engine, it has great transition and top end is 9400rpm on a
18 X 6 zinger pro. My spoiler weighs 11 3/4 lbs and pulls from hover at half. I cannot say enough good about this combo, use and abuse it and it stills swings that prop. I attached a picture of the plane when I was still using the stock muffler, no comparison to the pipe. BTW the rudder is touching my TX antenna even though the picture does not have enough resolution to show that.

Wow! My hobby shop owner quoted me a price today only $20.00 higher then I gave for the Magnum. I may have to have one of those. I have a friend using Mousse can pipes on smaller engines with great results, but I haven't seen them on an engine this big. You must be using a larger can and adapter pipes? Thanks for the info and picture.

Default spoiler stuff

jplaneman, you must have 3 mousse cans bonded together. You may be able to get the instructions from www.ecubedrc.com if he does not have them he should be able to help. Jeff Williams
